The Emergency Care Department at Union Health is looking for team members for the Terre Haute campus. The Union Hospital Emergency Department is the area’s busiest – providing life-saving treatment for injured and critically ill patients every day of the year. With over 55,000 patient visits annually, the emergency department at Union Hospital in Terre Haute is the busiest emergency department between Indianapolis and St. Louis.

Unit Secretary Essential Job Duties:

  1. Demonstrates awareness of unit activities to assist in promoting unit services
    • Consults with the registered nurse regarding unit activities.
    • Keeps patient records available for use.
  2. Applies knowledge of basic clerical skills.
    • Answers telephone. Relays messages to appropriate person. Notifies RN of diagnostic test results communicated as abnormal.
    • Copies patient care data accurately into the patient record as directed by the Registered Nurse.
    • Transcribes physician orders accurately.
  3. Completes unit duties as assigned by supervisor.
    • Enters patient laboratory and x-ray orders into the computer.
    • Assures that chart forms, paper and other clerical supplies are available on the unit.
    • Collects information for ED records as needed.
    • Maintains information accurately on the daily log.
    • Dismantles charts at time of discharge.

Education, Training & Experience

  • Excellent grasp of English.
  • Excellent reading skills required.
  • Excellent keyboarding skills preferred.
  • Functional or working knowledge of computers preferred.
  • Previous Unit Secretary or Ward Clerk experience desirable.
