Med Surg Nurse Manager

Description

Areas of Responsibility:

  • Maintains the standards of nursing care and implements the policies and procedures of the hospital and nursing department.
  • Assures that each patient on the unit has a comprehensive care plan that is individualized to meet his/her needs.
  • Assures ongoing evaluation of each patient's physical and psychosocial needs with appropriate initiation of nursing care and/or intervention.
  • Works collaboratively with health care team to assure patients receive nursing care that is evidenced based and allows for optimal patient outcomes.
  • Ensures staff give and receive report (shift sign off, hand off communication) accurately.
  • Ensures communication of patient's current status to nursing staff, physicians, ancillary staff, and nursing administrator is present through accurate verbal reports and documentation in the EMR.
  • Maintains clinical competency and expertise in Medical Surgical patient care, and ensures staff maintains clinical competency in care of the Medical Surgical patient.
  • Coordinates with Education Specialist to provide education to staff, as needed, to maintain competency for all staff assigned to the unit. Works with the Chief Nursing Officer and individual staff to develop educational goals and competencies for all assigned to the unit.
  • Reviews and revises departmental policies and procedures as needed to maintain quality yearly.
  • Responsible for coordination and planning of the orientation of new staff, travel and agency staff and the evaluation of their readiness for independent functioning. Coordinates with Education Specialist.
  • Responsible for creating staff schedule and revising of staffing patterns as necessary to be in compliance with established criteria and to provide safe patient care.
  • Remains current in new developments of nursing knowledge in area of expertise through a planned program of continuing education and attendance at facility mandatory in-services and meetings.
  • Assists with procurement of equipment and supplies in Med Surg by utilizing a logical and systematic inventory and replacement procedure.
  • Assists with the research and evaluation of new equipment and supplies.
  • Participates in preventive maintenance and proper use of equipment, instruments, and supplies in collaboration with BioMed and Materials departments.
  • Maintains good rapport with fellow workers and physicians. Performs his or her duties in a pleasant manner. Collaborates and actively participates in improving unit and organizational outcomes.


Nursing Standards of Practice

  • Works with Education Specialist for the assessment and documentation of department competencies. Facilitates opportunity for staff development education and training.
  • Leads regularly scheduled staff meetings and education for staff.
  • Works with staff and Chief Nursing Officer to ensure documentation meets standards and reflects the quality care given.
  • Supports department staff in coordinating patient care with ancillary departments.
  • Supports department staff in coordinating appropriate patient/family education.
  • Oversees admission, transfer, and discharge of patients in assigned department. Supports staff in facilitating the completion of necessary forms and making appropriate referrals.
  • Supports staff in managing and initiating intravenous fluids, blood and blood products, and medications with proper documentation and reporting of patient assessment observations to appropriate staff/proivders.
  • Supports staff in ensuring documentation is present in the EMR in regards to significant changes in patient's condition, reaction to medication, treatments and/or variances.
  • Supports staff in contacting the physician/provider regarding changes in patient condition as necessary and appropriate.
  • Supports staff in ordering, preparing, administering and recording medications and treatments accurately according to policy and procedure and the provider order.
  • Performs evaluation of work performance of staff members, addressing substandard performance in a timely manner.
  • Supports staff in evaluating that each patient achieves optimal clinical outcomes.
  • Performs monthly rounding on all staff members.
  • Performs daily leader rounding on patients.
  • Able to perform nursing duties, including charge nurse duties and assist with patient care as needed.


Collaboration/Quality

  • Supports staff in collaborating with the interdisciplinary team to coordinate care from admission to post-discharge.
  • Works cooperatively with the Chief Nursing Officer, Nursing Managers, and Ancillary Department Managers to ensure safe process are in place to care for patients, and to ensure all unit staff are doing the same.
  • Is knowledgeable in, follows and promotes facility policies and procedures including, but not limited to, Infection Control, Safety, Quality Assurance, and Facility and Physician Standing Orders.
  • Participate in Medical Staff, C.Q.I. meetings, and other committees as assigned, and report findings to comply with recommended guidelines for Med Surg unit.
  • Is knowledgeable and adheres to Patient Bill of Rights and hospital policies relating to privacy, confidentiality and respect.
  • Is knowledgeable of rules and regulations of the Minnesota Department of Health and the Department of Health and Human Services, and shares the responsibility to see that facility and staff are in compliance.
  • Works with other departments to ensure continuity of patient care.
  • Works with Chief Nursing Officer to develop annual goals/benchmarks/action plan to reach these.
  • Works with Chief Nursing Officer on creating departmental budget, fiscal management and strategic planning.
  • Establishes positive working relationships with other health care facilities and care collaboration public/private entities.


Physical Demands/Requirements:

  • Continual ability to be mobile, talking/hearing in person and on phone, vision for close up work & color vision needed.
  • Frequent walking, turning/pivoting, grasping, pushing/pulling, keyboarding, and repetitive hand movements.
  • Occasional sitting, stationary standing, stooping, twisting, reaching overhead, pinching, and lifting/carrying.
  • Lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling 30 pounds and over is an essential function of this position, in a non-repetitious manner.


Hip & Knee replacement Certification requirements; Shoulder Surgery Program Certification requirements; Spine Surgery Program Certification requirements.


Ensure department meets all requirements of the DNV Hip and Knee Replacement, Shoulder and Spine Certification Requirements to include communication requirements to staff.


  • Implements and monitors the HKRP, Shoulder and Spine care delivery model including case management, customer feedback and patient safety system.
  • Reports to HKRP, Shoulder and Spine Steering Committee and Quality Committee any required audit data, CQI and data related to DNV non-conformities.
  • Coordinate with Education Specialist to determine and provide required education to department staff to provide care for patients suffering from arthritis, injuries, fracture and osteoporosis including birth defects which may affect the bone or muscle and care for patients undergoing a joint replacement surgery, shoulder surgery or spine surgery.
  • Ensure staff are evaluated on an on going basis for competency and knowledge in their job description and as required by DNV Hip and Knee Replacement, Shoulder and Spine Certification Requirements.
Requirements
  1. A graduate of an accredited school of Nursing. Currently licensed as a registered Nurse by the State of Minnesota Board of Nursing. Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred.
  2. Previous experience in Med Surg nursing required.
  3. A sincere interest in nursing with knowledge in Med Surg nursing. An understanding of the physical, psychosocial, and emotional needs of the patient and family.
  4. Strong skills in oral and written communication, with the ability to communicate effectively with the team.
  5. Ability to develop rapport with all members of the health care team and ability to work in a positive, cooperative manner.
  6. Recognizes and serves customers (patients, staff, facility, and administration) to achieve positive outcomes.
  7. Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) required. Complete a TNCC course within eighteen months of hire. Will be added to RQI within the first 3 months of employment to be compliant with certifications required.
