Position Summary
The Union Stationary Engineer is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and repair of building systems and equipment to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient facility operations. This position supports critical mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems, performs preventative maintenance, and responds to operational issues in accordance with union standards, site procedures, and regulatory requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Operations & Maintenance
  • Operate, monitor, and maintain building systems including HVAC, boilers, chillers, cooling towers, pumps, air handlers, compressors, and control systems.
  • Perform scheduled preventive maintenance, inspections, and troubleshooting to ensure optimal equipment performance.
  • Respond promptly to alarms, equipment failures, and building emergencies.
  • Maintain accurate logs for equipment, rounds, readings, and maintenance activities.
  • Support building automation system (BAS) monitoring, adjustments, and optimization.
Repairs & Technical Work
  • Diagnose equipment issues and perform corrective repairs on mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems.
  • Replace belts, bearings, filters, motors, valves, and other components as required.
  • Assist with major equipment repairs and vendor-coordinated work.
  • Install or modify equipment and systems while adhering to safety codes and site standards.
Compliance & Safety
  • Follow all union work rules, site safety requirements, lockout/tagout procedures, and regulatory compliance guidelines.
  • Participate in safety meetings, training sessions, and required certifications.
  • Ensure equipment rooms and mechanical spaces are maintained in clean, safe, and code-compliant condition.
Work Management & Documentation
  • Review, complete, and close work orders in the CMMS system.
  • Provide detailed documentation of work performed, materials used, and equipment conditions.
  • Assist in reviewing maintenance plans and recommending system improvements or efficiencies.
Teamwork & Communication
  • Work collaboratively with other engineers, contractors, and site partners.
  • Communicate equipment issues, risks, and recommendations to leadership in a clear and timely manner.
  • Support onboarding and training of new team members as needed.
Qualifications
Required
  • Valid Union Stationary Engineer license or relevant trade certification per local jurisdiction requirements.
  • 3-5 years of experience in building operations, mechanical maintenance, or related trades.
  • Strong working knowledge of mechanical systems, HVAC equipment, boilers, chillers, and associated controls.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and equipment drawings.
  • Proficiency with hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic instruments.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work in various environmental conditions (rooftops, mechanical rooms, confined spaces).
Preferred
  • Experience in mission-critical or industrial environments (data centers, labs, hospitals).
  • BAS/BMS system experience (e.g., ALC, Johnson Controls, Siemens, Honeywell).
  • EPA Universal Refrigerant Certification.
  • Strong computer skills and experience with CMMS platforms.

Estimated compensation for this position:
151,694.00 - 151,694.00 USD per year
This range is an estimate and actual compensation may differ. Final compensation packages are determined by various considerations including but not limited to candidate qualifications, location, market conditions, and internal considerations.
