Duties
Help

• Operate 13,200-volt A.C. switchgear for ten secondary switchboards and related feeders and transformers.
• Operate, service, clean and make adjustments for stationary industrial systems equipment.
• Install, design, and service pneumatic and/or electric control systems for ventilating, heating, and cooling.
• Clean and make repairs to batteries, cables, and charging connectors.

• Strength test may be required.
• Physical Effort: Duties require prolonged standing, walking, stooping, bending, crawling stretching, and reaching above the shoulder. An extensive amount of hand, wrist, and arm movements is involved.
• Physical Effort: Work may require repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding, platforms, and where parts of systems worked on are in hard-to reach places. May require heavy lifting, 45 pounds and over.
• Working Conditions: Duties are mainly performed indoors but may involve exposure to cold temperatures during the performance of duties. Work may be performed where there is loud noise. Work is performed in proximity of moving mechanical parts, etc.
• Working Conditions: The incumbent may also be exposed to fumes or odors, dirt, dust and grease, etc.
• Requires possession of a Universal-type Chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) Recovery Certification for HVAC standard Electrical Power Controlling 5407, Air conditioning Equipment Operating 5415-Refrigerant Certification.
• Must be able to obtain and maintain a powered truck/forklift license.
• May be required to work overtime, shift work, holidays, and/or weekends.
• This is an essential personnel position, and the incumbent will be required to report to work during times of adverse weather conditions.

Qualifications
To qualify for the Stationary Engineer, you must meet the following requirements:
Applicants must meet the following Screen-Out element, Job Element #1 to be considered for this position. Ability to do the work of a Stationary Engineer without more than normal supervision. Applicants must have experience and/or training of sufficient scope and quality to independently perform the duties, which are:

1. Operation and understanding (at the journeyman level), of a chiller plant and its auxiliary equipment, accompanied with Universal Chlorofluorocarbons (CFC) certificates.
2. Ability to maintain, troubleshoot, and repair HVAC systems-including air conditioning, refrigeration, venting, and heating-as well as pneumatic control valve equipment, at a journeyman level with minimal supervision; AND
3. Knowledge in high voltage switching operations/electrical switch gears.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
All qualification requirements must be met by the closing date of this announcement to be considered.
Education
Substitution of education in lieu of experience may not be used for this grade level.

Background Investigation for Suitability:
To ensure the accomplishment of its mission, the GPO requires every employee to be reliable and trustworthy. To meet those standards, all selected applicants must undergo and successfully completed a background investigation for a Suitability. This review could include financial issues such as delinquency in the payment of debts, child support and/or tax obligations, as well as certain criminal offenses and illegal use or possession of drugs. Depending on the type of background investigation required, the security process may take between 6 weeks to 12 months. The Agency may rescind the tentative offer if the candidate is unable to obtain an interim clearance.
