Job description

Job Title

A successful candidate will play an active role in the City of College Park's existing operational success. The purpose of the position is to perform heavy, manual labor in the areas of water, sewer, sanitation, stormwater, and buildings and grounds. Successful performance helps ensure safe and efficient Public Works services, as well as a positive public image for the City of College Park.

Essential Functions

Independent judgment is required to identify, select and apply the most appropriate of available guidelines and procedures as well as interpret precedents. This position is responsible for manual work, which is performed alone or part of a Storm Water Crew, involving stormwater system inspections, maintenance, and repairs. Inspections include storm drain inlets, yard inlets, ditches, streams, and Detention Ponds. This position is required to perform heavy physical labor in all types of weather conditions, using a variety of tools and equipment.

  • Repairs and maintains City sewer lines and Storm Structure;
  • Build and position forms for pouring concrete catch basins, drop inlets and dismantle forms after use.
  • Dig ditches or trenches, backfill excavations, and compact and level earth to grade specifications, using picks, shovels, hand tampers, and rakes
  • Loads and unloads items such as stone, gravel, dirt, asphalt, pipes, timber, and heavy mechanical equipment.
  • Assists in semi-skilled work by handling tools, carrying or lifting lumber, mixing or placing cement and asphalt concrete, to perform repairs and insulation to Stormwater infrastructures.
  • Performs a variety of other heavy manual work when needed in connection with the maintenance of streets, roads, and facilities.
  • Assists in the installation of storm drainage pipes, and construction of catch basins.
  • Collects and disposes of debris, trash, etc. from the City Detention Ponds, and infrastructure.
  • Lubricate, clean, and service machinery, equipment, and tools.
  • Maintains and performs walk-around inspections on assigned equipment.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that logically relate to the position.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of City and department policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of safety rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge of the material commonly used in construction, maintenance, and repair activities as related to assigned areas.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety standards and practices applicable to work being conducted.
  • Skill in the operation, maintenance, and routine repair of equipment used in the Public Works construction and maintenance field.
  • Skill in performing various manual labor assignments as needed.
  • Ability to place and removes cones, barricades, warning devices, and/or directs traffic at worksites to ensure the safety of the work crew and public.
  • Ability to perform general equipment/tool maintenance duties.
  • Ability to interpret instructions and efficiently carry them out with general supervision.
  • Ability to perform tasks involving heavy manual labor.
  • Effective analytical and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent communication (oral and written), organizational, and time management skills.
  • Effective interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse constituents.
  • Attention to detail and adaptability to a changing environment is extremely important as well as dependability.
  • Demonstrate a high level of professionalism, initiative, resourcefulness, and personal accountability.
  • Moderate physical activity. Requires handling objects of average-weight up to one hundred (100) pounds, standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day, climb poles, bending, crouching, or stooping, and use tools and equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and distinguish between shades of color.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • Two (3) years of related experience.
  • Possession of a Valid State Class B CDL certification required or must obtain a Class B CDL within 6-month of employment.
  • Experience in communicating with diverse communities, and in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite, as well as knowledge and understanding of the organizational structure, workflow, and operating procedures.
  • Extensive hours and weekends will be required at times.
