What are union doormen?

Union doormen are building staff members who work in residential or commercial buildings and are represented by a labor union. Their primary responsibilities include greeting residents and visitors, monitoring building security, receiving packages, and assisting with entry and exit. Being part of a union provides doormen with negotiated benefits such as better wages, healthcare, job security, and workplace protections. Union doormen are commonly found in cities with large apartment buildings, such as New York City. Their role is essential in ensuring the safety, convenience, and comfort of building residents.

What are some common challenges Union Doormen face in high-traffic residential buildings?

Union Doormen in busy residential buildings often manage multiple responsibilities simultaneously, such as greeting residents, monitoring building security, handling packages, and coordinating with maintenance or management staff. A common challenge is balancing hospitality with security, ensuring the safety of the building while maintaining a welcoming atmosphere. Additionally, managing peak hours—when many residents arrive or leave—requires strong organizational skills and the ability to remain calm under pressure. Teamwork and clear communication with other staff members are essential for smooth operations.
