About CompScience
At CompScience, we're not just building software, we're saving lives. We're a high-growth startup on a mission to prevent 1 million workplace injuries through bold technological innovations, ensuring that everyone can go home safe at the end of the day.
Founded in 2019 and backed by investors from SpaceX, Tesla, and Anduril, we've assembled a powerhouse team that bridges two worlds:
  • Cutting-Edge Technology: Our product, design, and engineering teams are composed of distinguished computer vision engineers, software architects, data scientists and product and design leaders from Amazon R&D, Meta, and the self-driving car industry. They bring unparalleled expertise in AI, machine learning, and design to the realm of workplace safety.
  • Insurance Acumen: Our insurance team is made up of seasoned professionals who understand the nuances of workers' compensation policies. They work hand-in-hand with our tech experts to translate advanced analytics into tangible insurance products that truly serve our clients' needs.

Our groundbreaking perception-based risk assessment program, the first of its kind, provides the most comprehensive data stream available for risk analysis and monitoring and has proven to significantly reduce accidents in some of the world's most hazardous occupations.
We are hiring a senior underwriting leader to own portfolio performance across Workers' Compensation, General Liability, and Property. This role is responsible for sustaining 50-90% annual growth while improving loss ratio through disciplined underwriting, data-driven decision-making, and experimentation with proprietary underwriting technology.
This is a hands-on leadership role in a high-growth, tech-enabled insurance environment. The successful candidate will balance speed and precision, partner closely with data and product teams, and translate new underwriting signals into scalable decisions.
Responsibilities:
  • Take full accountability for underwriting outcomes across multiple lines, segments, and channels. Jointly drive growth, profitability, and loss ratio management.
  • Define underwriting appetite, pricing, coverage standards, and referral thresholds.
  • Review high-impact and high-growth risks, ensuring decisions scale without sacrificing quality.
  • Partner with Data and Product teams to test new underwriting signals.
  • Design controlled experiments and move successful signals into standard underwriting rules.
  • Identify profitable growth opportunities and maintain underwriting speed at scale.
  • Partner strategically with Business Development to unlock expansion.
  • Mentor and grow underwriting managers and senior underwriters.
  • Build a culture of accountability, learning, and disciplined judgment.
  • Serve as a senior underwriting point of contact, embedding carrier guidelines and capacity into everyday decisions.

Required Experience
  • 10-15+ years underwriting experience, with deep Workers' Compensation expertise
  • Senior underwriting leadership experience in an MGA, program, or high-growth carrier environment
  • Demonstrated track record of improving loss ratio while supporting aggressive growth
  • Experience operationalizing data- or technology-driven underwriting insights
  • Strong underwriting judgment and comfort making decisions with incomplete data

Working at CompScience
