About the Position

The Superintendent will provide hands-on leadership of field operations for heavy civil construction projects throughout the Columbus market. This individual will be responsible for directing daily production, supervising field personnel and subcontractors, coordinating equipment and crews, and ensuring projects are completed safely, efficiently, on schedule, and within budget.

The ideal candidate is an experienced heavy civil Superintendent with a strong background in earthwork, mass grading, excavation, and underground wet utilities. This is a key field leadership role for someone who can confidently manage complex site operations and resolve issues as they arise.

Key Responsibilities

  • Direct daily field operations for mass excavation, grading, trenching, and backfill activities.
  • Oversee installation of underground wet utilities, including storm drainage, sanitary sewer, and water mains.
  • Plan and coordinate crews, equipment, materials, and subcontractors to maintain production schedules.
  • Enforce company safety policies and OSHA standards across the jobsite.
  • Conduct daily job hazard analyses and ensure proper trenching and excavation safety practices.
  • Supervise foremen, heavy equipment operators, laborers, and subcontractors.
  • Coordinate closely with Project Managers, inspectors, engineers, and other project stakeholders.
  • Monitor daily production quantities, labor hours, equipment utilization, and material deliveries.
  • Read and interpret grading plans, utility drawings, specifications, and construction documents.
  • Utilize GPS machine control technology and coordinate with survey teams as needed.
  • Identify field issues and develop practical solutions to keep projects moving.
  • Maintain high standards for quality, productivity, and project execution.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of heavy civil construction experience, including significant responsibility for field operations.
  • Proven experience overseeing $5 million+ earthwork and underground utility projects.
  • Strong knowledge of mass excavation, grading, trenching, backfill, and site development.
  • Demonstrated experience with underground wet utilities, including storm drainage, sanitary sewer, and water mains.
  • Strong ability to read and interpret grading plans, utility blueprints, specifications, and construction documents.
  • Working knowledge of GPS machine control technology.
  • OSHA 30-hour certification required.
  • Competent person training for trenching and excavation required.
  • High School Diploma required; degree in Construction Management or a related field preferred.
  • Experience with commercial and/or industrial site development is preferred.
