What is a Umd job?

A UMD job typically refers to a position at the University of Maryland (UMD), which could cover various roles in academics, research, administration, or campus services. UMD offers jobs for faculty, staff, and students across different disciplines and departments. These positions provide opportunities for career growth, competitive benefits, and involvement in a dynamic academic environment. The specific duties and requirements depend on the role and department within the university.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a UMD (User Management and Deployment) Specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a UMD Specialist, you need a strong background in IT systems administration, user management, and deployment processes, often supported by a degree in computer science or related certifications like Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator or CompTIA Network+. Familiarity with user directory services (e.g., Active Directory), deployment tools (e.g., SCCM, Intune), and scripting languages such as PowerShell is crucial. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you manage user access and resolve issues efficiently. These competencies are essential to ensure secure, efficient user onboarding, system updates, and organizational IT compliance.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working at the University of Maryland (UMD) and how can they be addressed?

Professionals at the University of Maryland often navigate a large, diverse campus community, which can present challenges such as coordinating across multiple departments and managing complex projects with various stakeholders. Effective communication and strong organizational skills are key to overcoming these hurdles. Additionally, adapting to evolving academic and administrative technologies is crucial. Seeking mentorship, engaging in professional development opportunities, and actively participating in cross-functional meetings can help new employees integrate more smoothly and excel in their roles.

What are UMDs?

UMD most commonly stands for 'Universal Media Disc,' a format developed by Sony for use with its PlayStation Portable (PSP) handheld gaming system. UMDs are small, high-capacity optical discs used to store games, movies, and other media specifically for the PSP. While popular during the PSP’s peak, UMDs are now largely obsolete due to the rise of digital downloads and streaming. In other contexts, 'UMD' can also refer to 'University of Maryland,' but in the context of jobs or technology, it usually pertains to the media disc format.

Job description

Job Description SummaryOrganizational Summary:
Located just outside Washington, D.C., the University of Maryland is consistently ranked in the top 15 among U.S.-based institutions for AI-related research and education. In the past five years, faculty at UMD have collectively published over 1300 papers, been awarded over $160m in AI-related research grants, and involved in over 15 UMD-based AI-related centers; just last year, we taught over 17k student credit hours of AI-related courses.
The Artificial Intelligence Interdisciplinary Institute at Maryland's (AIM's) vision is to create a future where AI serves humanity and society by taking a broadly interdisciplinary approach to its development. We work across all twelve colleges on campus in research, education, community building, and external engagements to realize this vision. We imagine a world where technologists, humanists, social scientists, and others all contribute to a positive AI future, and where all students on campus have the opportunity to build their own AI expertise, regardless of their future career path. Community is extremely important to us at AIM, and we aspire toward UMD's Values listed at umd.edu/about/mission.
Launched in Spring 2024, AIM is a collaborative hub for AI, supporting faculty research, offering innovative and experiential learning opportunities and new degree programs, and focusing on responsible and ethical AI technology to advance the public good across industry, government and society. Against the backdrop of accelerating AI development-including generative AI-across an increasingly wide range of human activities, AIM recognizes that successful models of AI research and education must involve expertise from a wide range of disciplines, including (but not limited to) computer science and engineering, and humanistic and social scientific approaches, as well as experts in other disciplines where AI is on the cutting edge. Including these-and other-disciplines in the development of AI will ensure that this technology is developed in a way that supports people and society while minimizing social inequities and breaking down power structures.Additional Job Details
Job Description:

The Artificial Intelligence Interdisciplinary Institute at Maryland (AIM; aim.umd.edu) has openings for 10 lecturer positions (at all levels). There are two roles that candidates may apply for and candidates must select which role they seek in their application. The first is a standard lecturer role, whose primary responsibilities will be in teaching courses related to artificial intelligence, broadly construed. The second role combines the lecturer role with responsibilities around building and maintaining external relationships with community organizations, companies, NGOs, etc. and will involve both teaching responsibilities and external engagement responsibilities.

All professional track faculty members in AIM will work with our bright and amazing students and play a key role in teaching our artificial intelligence curricula. This hiring is in addition to 30 tenured and/or tenure-track faculty positions. As a member of AIM, applicants will join and help further our mission of defining and engaging in interdisciplinary AI education across all of the UMD College Park campus, and in building a thriving and inclusive AI community.

Strong candidates will be considered in all areas of AI, particularly those whose educational and teaching experience align with AIM's degree programs and other educational goals. AIM is proud to be partnering with other units on campus to launch two undergraduate degree programs in AI, a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Science degree. In addition, AIM seeks faculty who are interested in teaching general education courses or "big questions" courses that engage students from all disciplines, as well as capstone courses or AI clinics. We are especially looking for candidates that are interested in cross-disciplinary education as well as actively participating in a strong community of AI-related scholars. The Bachelor of Arts in Artificial Intelligence is a program that provides students with the technical skills necessary to engage with contemporary AI in a meaningful way and trains students in disciplines from the arts, the humanities, and the social sciences to enable them to understand, evaluate, and contribute to work in AI in a unique way. Specializations will include: Ethics; Language and Cognition; Design and User Experience; and Society, Culture and Technology. The Bachelor of Science in Artificial Intelligence is a highly technical program that trains students to build new AI systems and algorithms from the ground up, understand the training of models from both a data and systems perspective, and then use those techniques in interdisciplinary applications. Specializations will include: Generative AI; AI, Society, and Decision Making; AI Algorithms; Accessibility; and Robotics.

Questions for the faculty recruitment committee may be sent to aim@umd.edu.

Physical Demands: Normal classroom teaching demands.

Minimum qualifications:

  • M.A. or M.S..or equivalent in-hand at the time of joining the University.
