Job description

Description
The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is seeking to hire a Student Assistant who will work under the supervision of a Senior Transportation Engineer and the direction of a lead worker, in a learning capacity, to assist with the development of transportation projects in San Diego County. The Student Assistant will prepare exhibits, data summaries, draft reports, draft plan sheets, and cost estimates. The Student Assistant will query traffic data, perform quantity calculations, and review documents based on engineering standards. The Student Assistant will use Microsoft Office, Computer-Aided Design software, and web-based applications. The expected objective is for the incumbent to acquire knowledge and gain valuable experience.

This is a part-time, temporary, non-benefited, student position. Employment in all positions with University Enterprises, Inc. is dependent upon the mutual consent of University Enterprises, Inc. and the employee. This means that either University Enterprises, Inc. or the employee can, at any time, terminate the employment relationship at will, with or without cause.
Depending on the type of position you are applying for, a pre-employment background check consisting of one or more of the following may be conducted: employment history, professional references, criminal check: educational verification (degree, license, or official transcript) or DMV clearance. Applicants will be required to pass required pre-employment checks to the satisfaction of University Enterprises, Inc. (UEI) and the hiring Agency or Department.
UEI does not allow students to hold more than one UEI Job at a time, or work in more than one account per pay period. UEI employees who are considering leaving their current UEI student assistant position for a different UEI student assistant position should inform their supervisor in writing and provide at least a week's notice.
UEI is not a multi-state employer. UEI only employs candidates who live and work in the state of California. If selected for the position you must reside in California and all work must be performed in the state of California throughout the course of employment.
Prerequisites
Must be a college student attending classes during the regular term (fall, spring, and winter, if applicable), at one of the accredited colleges or universities on our affiliation list.

Students must be enrolled in at least six-semester units or nine quarter units for undergraduate students; four-semester units or six quarter units for graduate students.
Students declared major must match the major(s) listed in the job posting.
Majors/Fields of Study
Civil Engineering, Engineering, Engineering - Construction Management, or Urban Land Development.
Work Schedule
Flexible workdays and work hours, Monday - Friday, between 8 AM - 5 PM. Final work schedule will be determined by the supervisor.
Additional Work Schedule
Student Assistant and Graduate Assistant employees generally work up to 24 hours per workweek (Sunday - Saturday) during the academic year and up to 40 hours per workweek during breaks; (winter, spring, and summer).
Compensation
$18.28 - $28.16 per hour.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Must maintain a minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA.
  • Must complete each term with minimum unit requirements for Undergraduate and Graduate student classifications. Proof will be collected at the end of each Spring and Fall term.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft applications, Adobe Acrobat, and AutoCAD.
  • Ability to perform rudimentary engineering work, make precise calculations and estimates.
  • Working knowledge of advanced excel capabilities, including graphing, pivot tables, complex formulas, and lookups.
  • Must possess the ability to:
    • Apply engineering and design classroom instructions to work situations.
    • Learn procedures and methods.
    • Work well with others in a team environment.
    • Satisfactorily carry out assignments.
    • Do neat and accurate work and follow instructions completely.
  • Must possess the ability to:
    • Present ideas effectively orally and in writing.
    • Work effectively with others as an interdisciplinary team member.
    • Establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with those contacted during the course of the work.
  • Must possess the ability to
    • Work independently while exercising good judgment.
  • Applicants must have reached Junior standing as an engineering major.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Under the amendment to Government Code Section 18220, state agencies shall give preference to a qualified applicant (up to 26 years of age) who is, or has been, a dependent child in foster care, a homeless youth, a formerly incarcerated youth, or a victim of human trafficking.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • In a learning capacity, assists in the preparation of plan sheets, maps, and exhibits for transportation projects, based on appropriate design standards, policies, guidelines, and manuals.
  • In a learning capacity, assists in the development of Project Initiation Documents, Project Reports, special studies, and cost estimates. Assists in performing quantity calculations and documenting backup calculations. Research as-built plans and project history files to obtain information for project deliverables.
  • In a learning capacity, assists in coordination of project activities with other members of the Project Development Team. Assist in the preparation of requests for engineering and technical support from functional units, such as environmental studies, right-of-way certifications, traffic management plans, lane closure charts, and pavement structural section recommendations. Captures meeting minutes and maintains project files.
  • In a learning capacity, assists in the analysis of traffic data. Queries traffic data from the Performance Measurement System or other traffic data providers. Prepares data summaries, graphs, and internal reports to communicate traffic data with the project team.
  • In a learning capacity, assists in the review and comment preparation for engineering products, planning documents, traffic studies, and other technical documents.

Physical Requirements
This position may require sitting for long periods of time at a keyboard and video display terminal. Some lifting, carrying, bending, squatting, kneeling, crouching, reaching, and pulling may be required. Must be able to transport a variety of objects and equipment that are elements less than or equal to 25 pounds. While in the office setting, the student will be working in a climate-controlled environment with artificial lighting. Multi-floor buildings are equipped with elevators and stairs. Work environment includes constant interaction with a diverse group of customers and co-workers.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office environment.
The base of the operation will be in the District Office.
