What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a UCSD Per Diem employee, and why are they important?

To thrive as a UCSD Per Diem employee, you generally need relevant professional credentials (such as licensure or certification in your field), strong technical expertise, and prior experience in a healthcare or academic setting. Familiarity with UC San Diego Health systems, electronic medical records (like Epic), and specific departmental protocols is often required. Flexibility, reliability, and effective communication are essential soft skills for adapting to variable schedules and collaborating with diverse teams. These skills and qualifications ensure quality service delivery, patient safety, and seamless integration into dynamic, short-term staffing needs.

What is a UCSD Per Diem?

UCSD Per Diem positions are flexible, on-call jobs at UC San Diego, typically in healthcare, research, or administrative roles. Employees in these roles work as needed, often to cover staff shortages or fluctuating workloads. Per diem staff do not have guaranteed hours but receive higher hourly pay rates in exchange for this flexibility. These positions offer valuable experience and the opportunity to work in a dynamic academic and medical environment, though they may not include full-time benefits.

What are the typical scheduling expectations and flexibility for a UCSD Per Diem position?

UCSD Per Diem roles are designed to offer flexible, as-needed work schedules to support operational demands, which can vary week to week. While per diem staff often have the freedom to accept or decline shifts based on availability, they may be called upon to cover evenings, weekends, or holidays, especially during peak periods or staff shortages. Communication with supervisors is key to ensuring mutual understanding of availability, and reliability in accepting scheduled shifts is highly valued. This flexibility makes per diem positions ideal for those seeking work-life balance or supplemental income, but candidates should be prepared for potential variability in hours and shift assignments.
