What is a UCG?

UCG stands for Underground Coal Gasification, a process where coal is converted into gas while still underground. This method involves injecting oxidants into coal seams and extracting the resulting synthetic gas, which can be used for power generation, chemicals, or as a fuel. UCG can access deep or otherwise unmineable coal resources and is considered by some as a cleaner alternative to traditional coal mining. However, it also poses environmental challenges such as groundwater contamination and subsidence risks.
