What jobs will no longer exist in 2030?

For a TV guide-related job, traditional roles such as print TV listings or manual scheduling jobs are likely to disappear as digital and automated scheduling tools become more advanced. Jobs involving manual content curation may decline as AI and machine learning automate programming decisions and guide updates. Adaptation to new technologies and skills in digital content management will be essential for future roles in this field.

What is a TV guide?

A TV guide is a resource that provides information about television programming, including schedules, channels, show descriptions, and air times. It helps viewers plan what to watch by listing upcoming shows, movies, and special events on various TV networks. TV guides are available in print, online, and through interactive electronic program guides on televisions or streaming devices. They often include features such as recommendations, reviews, and the ability to set reminders for favorite programs.

What is the difference between Tv Guide vs Broadcast Technician?

AspectTv GuideBroadcast Technician
Required CredentialsNone specific, often high school diploma or equivalentTechnical certifications or associate degree in broadcasting or electronics
Work EnvironmentMedia companies, TV networks, publishingBroadcast stations, production facilities, technical settings
Industry UsageContent scheduling, TV listings, media publishingMaintaining broadcast equipment, signal transmission

The main difference is that Tv Guides focus on scheduling and listing TV programs, often in print or digital formats, while Broadcast Technicians handle the technical aspects of transmitting TV signals. Tv Guides are consumer-facing products, whereas Broadcast Technicians work behind the scenes to ensure broadcasts run smoothly.

How to become a TV reviewer?

To become a TV reviewer, develop strong writing and critical analysis skills, often through a background in journalism, media studies, or related fields. Build a portfolio by regularly reviewing shows on personal blogs or social media, and gain familiarity with industry tools like media databases and review platforms. Networking with media outlets and understanding copyright and fair use policies can also help establish a career in TV reviewing.

What are the main challenges faced by TV Guide editors when keeping schedules accurate and up to date?

TV Guide editors often face the challenge of managing last-minute programming changes, such as live events running over time or networks making sudden schedule adjustments. Staying in close communication with broadcasters and leveraging reliable scheduling software are essential to ensure accuracy. Editors must also carefully fact-check information and work efficiently under tight deadlines to minimize errors, as even small inaccuracies can impact readers' viewing plans. This role requires exceptional attention to detail and strong organizational skills to keep pace with the fast-moving television industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a TV Guide, and why are they important?

To thrive as a TV Guide Editor or Listings Coordinator, you need strong editorial skills, attention to detail, and a solid understanding of television programming, often supported by a degree in communications, journalism, or a related field. Familiarity with content management systems (CMS), scheduling software, and databases is typically required. Excellent organizational skills, adaptability, and clear communication help ensure accuracy and timely updates in a fast-paced environment. These skills are crucial for delivering reliable, user-friendly TV schedules to audiences and maintaining the publication's reputation.

What job pays you to watch TV?

A TV guide or TV reviewer can earn money by watching and analyzing television programs, often for media companies, streaming services, or as part of content curation. These roles may require strong attention to detail, knowledge of media, and sometimes a background in journalism or media studies.

Are TV guides still a thing?

TV guides, once printed publications or TV channel listings, have largely transitioned to digital formats such as online guides and streaming app interfaces. TV guide jobs may involve updating digital schedules or managing electronic listings, which remain relevant in the broadcasting and media industries.

Job description

About the Team

We believe that great user experiences come from people who have the vision to see the big picture while still maintaining an incredible attention to detail. The User Experience team at Roku is comprised of UX designers, researchers, and writers working collaboratively with our world-class Product and Engineering teams to meet customer needs for a Roku experience that delivers simplicity and delight.

About the Role

Roku is looking for a UX Product Designer with strong interaction design skills to drive the evolution of the Frndly live TV streaming experience and the integration of Frndly TV into the overall Roku discovery and playback experience. This design work will involve UX for browsing and searching for shows, live TV guide integration, playback, DVR functionality, merchandising, entry into subscription signup flows, and more. There will be significant collaboration with other UX designers working in these areas. Designs will apply to our TV OS 10-foot experience and our web experience.

Frndly TV will join more than 60 premium subscription services that have been integrated within the Roku platform - including Apple TV, Peacock, Paramount+, HBO Max, and Fox One - with more coming every quarter. Each features a consistent user interface to help customers enjoy their entertainment across multiple subscriptions in one place.

For California Only - The estimated annual salary for this position is between $185,000 and $210,000 annually. Compensation packages are based on factors unique to each candidate, including but not limited to skill set, certifications, and specific geographical location. This role is eligible for health insurance, equity awards, life insurance, disability benefits, parental leave, wellness benefits, and paid time off.

What You'll Be Doing
  • Work closely with product managers and business stakeholders to identify the problems, business priorities, and user outcomes that your designs will address
  • Collaborate closely with Product Management and Engineering throughout the project lifecycle as the primary UX point of contact
  • Partner with experienced User Researchers to gain insight on user needs, and to determine and execute the ideal research methodology to evaluate your designs
  • Design features for Frndly so that they collectively create a consistent, seamless, easy-to-use experience for customers to subscribe to and watch their favorite shows
  • Collaborate with other UX designers responsible for features related to browsing, searching, playback, live TV Guide, sign-up flows, and more
  • Use AI tools to help refine features, build prototypes, and help elevate and evolve the craft of UX at Roku by contributing new skills and AI-focused process innovations
  • Own your designs and communicate effectively, articulating your design decisions to colleagues from diverse disciplines
  • Give and receive feedback in regular design critiques with your peers and during formal design reviews with UX management
We're Excited If You Have
  • 3+ years of UX design experience focused on interaction design for consumer products. Experience designing a variety of features related to TV streaming services for consumer audiences is a big plus
  • A proven track record in interaction design, showing artifacts of the process that help support your design decisions, as well as the business results driven by those designs
  • Experience collaborating with product managers, developers, and management to refine design concepts through rapid iterations, meeting the goals of both users and the business
  • Hands-on experience working with User Researchers (or conducting User Research yourself) and utilizing the results of that research to shape your designs
  • Expertise in designing and prototyping with Figma
  • Practical experience and personal enthusiasm for using AI tools throughout the UX design process, and for managing your work overall
  • A passion for getting the subtle details right when it comes to creating a high-performing, world-class experience
  • Endless empathy for the user
  • A degree in Design, Human-Computer Interaction, or a related field
