JOB SUMMARY

Provides culturally appropriate, directly observed therapy (DOT) to patients with Tuberculosis, utilizing language-specific interpretation when necessary.

This position works directly with patients who have active tuberculosis (TB) in their homes or community setting providing daily medication and making sure it is taken appropriately and uses appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when working with patients. This position works closely with public health nurses and community partners to assist patients with needs such as housing, medical care, insurance, and other resources. This position requires reliable transportation, as a County vehicle may not always be available.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

One (1) year of experience working with clients in a health-related field.

Preference will be given to applicants who are able to read, write, and speak English and another language fluently.

A valid Driver’s License accepted by the State of Utah is required at the time of hire.  A valid Driver’s License issued by the State of Utah must be obtained within six (6) months of hire to operate a County vehicle.

Due to the nature of this position, the successful applicant must pass a required background check through fingerprinting and enrollment in the continuous RAP Back (Record of Arrest and Prosecution Back) program in accordance with current County Human Resources policy requirements.

Due to the nature of this role, vaccination or proof of vaccination may be required.

Upon hire, a two-step Tuberculosis skin test will be required. The first will need to be placed prior to starting employment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Observes clients with tuberculosis taking their medication at home, work, school, or in the office.
• Builds a relationship with the client and family that fosters communication, confidence, and compliance with medication and treatment plan.
• Observes for adverse effects of medication and health complaints by asking medical-related questions and reports findings to the Public Health Nurse (PHN).
• Acts as a liaison between the client and PHN and communicates all findings.
• Provides and maintains medical documentation regarding assignments.
• Assists the PHN in identifying the best use of incentives for the client to complete treatment for TB.
• Provides documentation for a wide variety of written materials, including letters, medical informational literature, using appropriate terminology and applying appropriate literacy level to the reading audience.
• Utilizes electronic and/or in-person translation services to provide non-English-speaking client education regarding TB, color blindness, skin testing, and other infectious diseases.
• Provides testing and counseling to persons exposed to tuberculosis in a variety of community, business, institutional, and home settings to identify and reduce transmission of tuberculosis.
• Assists PHN in contact tracing, evaluation, testing, and case investigations.
• Provides education to community partners on tuberculosis as needed.
• Delivers and picks up laboratory specimens as needed.
• Picks up medical records and X-rays from hospitals and physicians in the community.
• Complies with all Department standards and protocols to assure safety and good work practices for staff and clients, especially keeping in mind various work-related risks.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Work in an office setting, clinic setting, and client homes. Includes sitting, standing, bending, and lifting. On occasion, will be required to work while wearing a protective mask over the mouth and nose. Will require the use of personal protective equipment. Will be required to work with laboratory samples of body fluids (i.e., blood, sputum, urine, and stool).

This position typically works Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM - 9:00 PM.
