Job description

TITLE: Triathlon Coach
LOCATION: Madison Ave. Clubhouse - Bridgeport CT
DEPARTMENT: REPORTS TO: Director of Teen & Leadership initiatives
EMPLOYEE CLASSIFICATION: Seasonal, Stipend Position
Program Dates: June 29th - August 1, 2026
Training Schedule: Monday-Friday, 12:00PM - 4:00PM
POSITION SUMMARY:
Wakeman Boys & Girls Club is seeking enthusiastic, dependable, and energetic coaches to lead participants in the Race4Chase Youth Triathlon Program. Race4Chase is a free, six-week youth development program inspired by the life of Chase Kowalski and supported by the CMAK Sandy Hook Memorial Foundation. The program introduces youth ages 6-12 to the sports of swimming, cycling, and running while promoting healthy lifestyles, confidence, resilience, teamwork, and goal setting.
Race4Chase Coaches play a critical role in creating a safe, supportive, and encouraging environment where every participant can build new skills and celebrate personal achievements regardless of athletic experience
KEY ROLES (Essential Job Responsibilities):
  • Plan and lead daily triathlon training activities for youth ages 6-12.
  • Teach and reinforce fundamental swimming, cycling, and running skills using age-appropriate instruction.
  • Foster an inclusive, positive, and non-competitive environment where every participant feels successful.
  • Serve as a positive role model by demonstrating professionalism, sportsmanship, integrity, and respect.
  • Promote healthy lifestyle habits, including physical activity, teamwork, perseverance, and personal responsibility.
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of all participants by following Wakeman Boys & Girls Club safety policies and procedures.
  • Supervise youth during transportation and transitions between the Madison Avenue Community Clubhouse and swimming pool.
  • Assist with equipment distribution, bike fitting, setup, breakdown, and proper storage of program materials.
  • Monitor participant attendance and communicate concerns or incidents promptly to the Senior Program Director.
  • Encourage participants to attend all scheduled training sessions in preparation for the culminating Race4Chase Youth Triathlon.
  • Assist with race-day logistics, participant supervision, and event operations.
  • Build positive relationships with youth, families, community partners, and fellow staff members.
  • Attend required staff meetings, trainings, and orientation sessions.

SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Experience working with children in youth development, recreation, athletics, camps, or education preferred.
  • Experience coaching or participating in swimming, cycling, running, or endurance sports is preferred but not required.
  • Strong interpersonal, leadership, and communication skills.
  • Ability to motivate and encourage youth of varying athletic abilities.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated commitment to providing a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Ability to actively participate in swimming, cycling, running, and outdoor recreational activities.
  • Ability to stand, walk, jog, and remain physically active for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift and transport equipment weighing up to 30 pounds.
  • Ability to work outdoors during varying summer weather conditions.

REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS & SCREENING:
Successful candidates must:
  • Complete all Wakeman Boys & Girls Club onboarding requirements.
  • Successfully pass a criminal background check.
  • Complete all required Boys & Girls Club of America child safety trainings.
  • Maintain current CPR/AED and First Aid certification (or obtain certification before program
