Job description

Job Title: STREET MAINTENANCE AND REFUSE COLLECTION WORKER

Department: Sanitation

Reports To: Director or Supervisor

Directs Work Of: NA

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

EEO-4 Classification: Service Maintenance

Effective Dates: 01/01/2019, 7/19/2022

Normal Work Hours: 6:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Normal Work Days: Monday through Friday


Education/Experience

Education: There is no minimum educational requirement, but a high school diploma or the equivalent is preferred; a valid driver's license is required. Experience: Knowledge of proper use of hand tools, chainsaws, lawn equipment, and ability to safely operate a light-duty truck.

Position Summary: Performs manual work in a variety of settings including city-wide yard waste & trash collection, routine street patching, painting and cleaning, street sign placement, and grounds maintenance. May drive light-duty trucks in the performance of duties related to this work.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Other related duties may be assigned.

Collects and removes trash/refuse and yard waste from City streets, residential neighborhoods and businesses.

Performs a variety of street maintenance tasks including: hot patching pavement, painting/striping school crossing/zone lines, removal of debris resulting from vehicle accidents, and cleanup of oil spills.

Places new and replaces damaged street signage.

Performs ground maintenance: mowing, weed eating, cleaning fence lines, and operating a wood chipper.

Performs routine maintenance and cleaning of equipment and vehicles used in performing work.

Operates a variety of equipment, hand and power tools including but not limited to lawn mowers, weed eaters, wood chippers, chainsaws, shovels, and light-duty trucks

Language - Ability to read and interpret safety rules, equipment operating and maintenance instructions, and routine procedure manuals.

Quality & Quantity - Demonstrates accuracy and thoroughness. Completes work in timely manner.

Dependability - Follows instructions, responds appropriately to management direction; Takes responsibility for own actions; Commits to long hours of work when necessary to complete work; Employee is consistently at work as scheduled and on time for work assignments. Readily assists/volunteers to assist co-workers.

  • Basic understanding of routine plumbing and electrical repairs

  • Basic understanding of Safety rules and safe equipment operation.

Licenses:

Possess a valid driver's license.

Position requires walking and standing for extended periods of time; bending, pushing, pulling, squatting, twisting, crawling, kneeling, and climbing frequently in the performance of job duties; and working with hand and power tools/equipment. Requires ability and willingness to work after normal work hours and to work any shift, holidays, and weekends if needed.
