Summary Description: Carolina Country magazine, reaching more than 2.2 million readers and published on behalf of North Carolinaโ€™s electric cooperatives, is seeking an associate editor to contribute to the success of our award-winning monthly publication. The full-time position will support the Publications Department of the Raleigh-based North Carolina Association of Electric Cooperatives across editorial and business functions of magazine production.

Academic and Trade Qualifications: Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in journalism, English, mass communication, digital communications or related field.

Work Experience: Minimum 3 years as writer, editor or editorial assistant with a daily, weekly or monthly publication.

Responsibilities:

  • Pitch, research and write content for Carolina Country magazine, including articles showcasing people and places across North Carolina.
  • Edit content for monthly publication including general lifestyle articles and events listings.
  • Provide copyediting support during monthly publication cycle and for occasional corporate communication pieces.
  • Assist in planning and production of monthly Carolina Country.
  • Assist in managing reader and freelancer correspondence, assigning stories and managing the submission process as necessary.
  • Attend statewide and co-op functions as necessary as a representative of Carolina Country.
  • Plan and create content for use by member co-ops, including general content for monthly newsletters and content promoting community programs including Bright Ideas and Cooperative All Star Sports Camp Scholarships.
  • Work with the Senior Associate Editor to coordinate with co-op communications contacts when needed, assisting with monthly newsletter production cycle.
  • Write content as needed for digital channels, including carolinacountry.com, social media and email newsletters.
  • Assist with administrative tasks such as general mailings, sorting and responding to mailed reader correspondence, monthly distribution of the magazine to contributors and other support as needed.

Job Knowledge:

Knowledge of processes and technology involved in producing publications, including delivering quality work on a deadline. Excellent skills in written and oral communication.

  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint, and in using social media (primarily Facebook and Instagram).

Relationships and Contacts:

Reports to the Director of Publications. Collaborate with Corporate Communications and Brand Strategy teams as necessary.

Working Conditions: Normal working conditions, including some travel and responsibilities outside of normal business hours. In-office/remote hybrid available.
