Description

American Traveler is hiring an experienced RN for a busy Level 2 trauma Emergency Department, requiring a South Dakota or compact RN license and at least 2 years of non-travel ED experience.

Details
  • Work in a 33-bed Emergency Department at a hospital, seeing 150-180 patients daily
  • Main ED includes 8 Trauma/Resuscitation beds, one Behavioral Health pod (convertible to medical use), and 5 additional pods
  • Additional vertical care area used for ESI 3-4 patients or as overflow high-acuity pods
  • Level 2 trauma center with heavy trauma volume, especially during summer months (stab wounds, GSWs, MVCs, drownings, falls)
  • Certified Stroke Center caring for patients presenting with stroke symptoms up to 24 hours
  • Cares for neonatal through geriatric patients including sepsis, DKA, respiratory illness, and GI bleeds requiring emergent blood products
  • Cardiac patient population supported by an on-site cardiac catheter lab
  • RNs rotate in Sexual Assault evidence collection duties (not including pelvic exams) with support from a 24/7 SA Quality Coordinator and CRNs
  • RN patient ratio of 1:4-5, LPN ratio of 1:4-5, and ED Tech ratio of 1:10
  • Unit support includes ED Techs, Lead Tech, 24/7 charge nurse coverage, 24/7 phlebotomy, respiratory therapy, 24/7 physician/hospitalist/NP coverage, radiology/CT, pharmacy tech, and security
  • No dedicated IV/VAT team on the unit
  • Uses Epic EMR, Omnicell, and Alaris equipment
  • 12-hour variable shifts with start times including 0630-1900, 1000-2230, 1200-0030, 1400-0200, and 1830-0700
  • Scheduled for 36 hours per week with potential to work every weekend depending on staffing needs
  • Will not work both day and night shifts within the same week
  • May float to inpatient Med/Surg, PCU, or ICU as a task nurse only, not for a full assignment
  • No on-call responsibilities
  • Holiday coverage only required if needed
Requirements
  • Active RN license (South Dakota or Compact) currently in hand
  • Required certifications: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS, TNCC, and PALS
  • CPI or MAB/MOAB certification preferred
  • Minimum 2 years of ED experience, excluding travel experience, strongly preferred
  • Experience with the full range of ED patient populations listed, including trauma, stroke, cardiac, pediatric critical care, and sexual assault cases
  • Strong triage skills including ESI assessments and ability to distinguish acuity levels
  • Critical thinking and prioritization skills for managing multiple patient needs
  • Epic EMR experience preferred
Additional Information
  • Provide direct patient care across the full ED patient population, including trauma, stroke, cardiac, and pediatric critical care cases
  • Perform ESI assessments during triage to determine patient acuity and prioritize care
  • Participate in Sexual Assault evidence collection in rotation with permanent staff, supported by a 24/7 SA Quality Coordinator and CRNs
  • May be asked to precept nursing students
  • Orientation includes 8 hours of facility-level NEO plus 4 hours of ED-specific education and a minimum of two 12-hour shifts on the unit (three shifts for those contracted at 48 hours/week)
  • Navy scrub color required
  • Free parking provided
  • Time off requests require manager approval, and no time off will be granted during the first three weeks of August due to the Sturgis Bike Rally
  • First-time travelers will not be considered for this position
  • Travelers must live more than 100 miles from any Monument facility to be eligible
  • Permanent staff must wait one full year before returning in a travel role
  • Facility is known for being traveler-friendly and frequently renews travel contracts
