Position Description
JOB TITLE: Bus Driver Special Needs (multiple positions)
FTE: .625 FTE; 5 hours per day
Salary: $18.79 - $23.23 per hour
F.L.S.A. Non Exempt
Reports To: Director of Transportation
JOB SUMMARY
To provide safe and efficient transportation so that the students participating in Special Programs may enjoy the fullest possible advantage from the district's curriculum. Work is characterized by ability to follow routes, and to make independent decisions that align project objectives with department and district goals. Performs duties with general supervision from an assigned supervisor.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential duties of this position include the following. Employees in this position perform some or all of the following tasks. Other related duties may be assigned.
1. Follows and maintains knowledge of all applicable District policies and procedures.
2. Drives school buses or any district Pupil Transporting Vehicle on regularly scheduled routes, and other type of district approved trips. Could include vehicles equipped for wheel chairs and other special needs.
3. Transport students with special needs inside and outside the district.
4. Completes and implements training as needed regarding special needs of students and demonstrates sensitivity to the students being transported.
5. Maintain confidentiality regarding students being transported.
6. Obeys all traffic laws and observes State of Oregon standards and regulations regarding the transportation of students, as well as Defensive Driving Techniques.
7. Demonstrates a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of all state and local laws and regulations pertaining to the operation of the vehicle driver will be expected to drive.
8. Demonstrates a comprehensive knowledge of the location, operation, purpose and use of all controls, instruments, gauges, and emergency equipment on the vehicle driver will operate.
9. Demonstrates the necessary physical skills and mental ability to safely and efficiently operate the vehicle as determined by the certified training officer.
10. Demonstrates a comprehensive knowledge of state, local and district regulations involving the responsibilities of bus drivers, including those dealing with student management, discipline procedures, public relations and related items.
11. Exhibits a familiarity with any route driver will be required to drive.
12. Exercise sound judgement in driving in varying weather conditions, on all types of roads and in changing traffic conditions.
13. Operate and service school bus equipment and accessories such as doors, windows, radios, fire extinguishers, highway warning kits, tire chains, first aid and body fluid kits, and seat belt cutter.
14. Coordinates with other school districts as well as parents regarding daily route schedules and operations of schools.
15. May be required to plan and develop route change as necessary.
16. Follows accident/emergency procedures and exhibits a competency to handle emergency situations, including first aid.
17. Manages student efficiently; maintains safety and order when students are on the bus; reports undisciplined students to the appropriate administrator.
18. Keeps assigned bus clean inside; checks bus before each operation for mechanical defects; notifies the transportation supervisor in case of mechanical failure or lateness.
19. Picks up and discharges students only at authorized stops; transports only those students on the
route list or those who have obtained a bus pass.
20. Reports all accidents and completes required reports and paperwork in an accurate and timely manner.
21. Reports all incidents which need to be brought to the attention of the Transportation Director
on a Miscellaneous Incident Report.
22. While working collaboratively with others, implements decisions within ASD established policies and procedures.
23. Professionally represents the school and the District in interactions with parents, community, staff, and students and resolves conflict in a professional manner.
24. Works collaboratively with District and building administrators and other department staff to
provide reliable service to customers.
25. Communicate clearly with coworkers and other staff.
26. Participate as an effective team member.
27. Provide impeccable customer service.
28. Maintains appropriate certifications and training hours as required.
29. Follows and maintains knowledge of all District policies and procedures.
30. Attend work regularly and is punctual.
31. Annually pass the District's required online training by the District's assigned due-date.
MARGINAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Marginal duties of this position include the following. Employees in this position perform some or all of the following tasks. Other related duties may be assigned.

  2. Participates in professional growth activities.
  3. Attends staff meetings.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
All school employees have some responsibility for supervising students and assisting in maintaining a safe environment.
QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education and/or Experience: High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) required.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Ability to interact calmly with students, and to maintain concentration and patience in noisy and distracting conditions. Possess a sincere desire to work with students and become familiar with the handicapping condition of each student.
  • Language Skills: Ability to communicate fluently verbally and in writing in English. Ability to follow written directions. Must possess basic telephone and office skills.
  • Mathematical Skills: Ability to perform basic math functions such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. .
  • Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, schedule or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several variables in a variety of situations.
  • Computer Skills: Basic computer skills required, including the ability to receive, send and communicate by email, utilize the District's sub-calling software, and complete basic data entry on computer.
  • Other Skills and Abilities: Ability to appropriately communicate with students, teachers, administrators, parents and members of the community. Ability to exercise good judgment and work in an environment with constant distractions.
  • Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Certificates as determined by the District including a current valid Oregon Commercial Driver's license and first aid card. Must be able to obtain an Oregon Department of Education School Bus Drivers Certificate.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The employee may assist well and/or physically impaired students on and off the bus through passenger service door. The employee must demonstrate sufficient strength and agility to move about in bus to assist students with evacuation in case of emergency. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus and peripheral vision.
