Job Summary
Summary
Provides instructional, group, and individual behavior, and transportation support to bus drivers in school bus settings, assisting individuals or small groups of students to enhance safety. Assists bus drivers with instruction and bus management that occurs in special education and general education buses.
Distinguishing Career Features
The Transportation Assistant is the first-level career path for instructional support to teachers. The Transportation Assistant provides instructional and transportation assistance to special education buses. Transportation Assistants are typically assigned to Special Education environments and students during transportation between home and the school site and school-sponsored field trips through and including frequent support to severely handicapped students. These positions typically have work assignments involving therapeutic, behavioral, and medical dimensions. Some assignments may require bi-lingual/bi-literate competency.
Abilities
Requires the ability to assist bus drivers with the implementation of safe transportation. Requires the ability to assess the needs of individual students and develop interventions to meet those needs. Requires the ability to interact with teachers, parents, and specialists to carry out assigned duties. Requires the ability to oversee students, and perform general clerical tasks. Requires the ability to relate positively to students in a teaching/learning environment in a way that builds confidence, and recognizes and works on learning disabilities and barriers.
Physical Abilities
Requires the ability to perform indoors and outdoors in an office and/or bus environment engaged in work of primarily a sedentary to a moderately active nature. Requires near visual acuity to read and write printed materials and computer screens. Requires hearing and speech ability for ordinary and telephonic conversation, to speak to groups, and to hear sound prompts from equipment.
