POSITION TITLE: Assistant Director of Transportation REPORTS TO: Transportation Director BEGINNING DATE: Open Until Filled

NATURE OF WORK:

An employee in this class will assist the Transportation Director in the school transportation program within the county school system. Work is planned and directed through the interpretation and application of guidelines. The employee is expected to resolve most problems and to confer with the Director of Transportation on problems of policy and serves as acting Director in his/her absence. Work is performed under general supervision. Administrative supervision is exercised over a number of skilled, semi-skilled and unskilled employees.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Considerable knowledge of vehicular service and repair principles and techniques
  • Considerable knowledge of routing
  • Working knowledge of record keeping and reporting techniques
  • Some knowledge of management principles
  • Skill in effective oral and written communication
  • Ability to gather and analyze data
  • Ability to plan and supervise the work of others

EDUCATION AND TRAINING:

  • High School Diploma required.
  • Considerable experience (3 to 5 years) in performing the full range of tasks associated with management of a transportation system.
  • Prior experience as a bus driver, mechanic, or coordinator preferred. 

TERM OF EMPLOYMENT:  12 months

SALARY:  State Salary Grade 70

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Develops procedures for vehicular service and repair.
  2. Prioritizes work to be accomplished.
  3. Develops work plans.
  4. Tests new equipment.
  5. Applies standards for vehicle replacement.
  6. Develops transportation routes.
  7. Arranges transportation for students with special needs.
  8. Develops programs of studies relating to school consolidation or for improving existing transportation services.
  9. Investigates and reports accidents.
  10. Communicates with Department of Transportation on roads, bridges, signs, etc.
  11. Makes recommendations regarding hazardous road conditions.
  12. Develops and monitors budgets.
  13. Establishes an inventory system of parts.
  14. Directs the preparation and submission of all transportation reports.
  15. Reports on disposal of pollutants and other hazardous materials.
  16. Manages and recommends the selection, training, certification of fitness and competence, and termination of bus drivers.
  17. Collaborates with school principals in the recruitment of drivers and routing of buses.
  18. Recommends transportation personnel to be hired, disciplined, discharged or promoted.
  19. Ensures employees are provided needed training.
