Job description

Hutchinson Public Schools is seeking a Translator/Interpreter for the Summer of 2026. 

The Translator/Interpreter will convert oral speech and written text from one language to another in a variety of contexts so families have equitable access to their child's/children's educational information. Requests for translation/interpretation will be determined by administration in collaboration with school staff.  This position will primarily support EL students and families but will assist as needed in other areas of the district. If the Translator/Interpreter is employed in another position in the district, this work will primarily happen outside of their regular scheduled working hours, ideally the hours right before or right after the regularly scheduled work day. 

This position will work from June 2026 - August 2026, work hours per week will vary. The salary range for this position is $19.00 per hour - $25.00 per hour. Salary is dependent upon education and experience. Benefits include a retirement plan with employer contribution. 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities: 

  • Understands and analyzes what is being said or written, and effectively and accurately translates the message, intent being communicated.
  • Translates statements or questions to the desired language.
  • Facilitates effective communication among individuals, including school staff, students and families. 
  • Protects the confidentiality of information and adheres to any related ethical or professional codes.
  • Unless there is an emergency situation, translation/interpreting work is to be done in a school building and must be approved by administration. 
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications: 

  • High School diploma or GED
  • Fluency in and understanding of primarily language(s) being translated.
  • Previous translating/interpreting experience is preferred.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in the applicable languages. 
  • Proficient in Google Apps (Email, Drive, Docs, Sheets),SpEd Forms or related software.
  • Strong computer skills
  • Ability to appropriately understand and respond to culturally sensitive situations, perspectives, and phrases.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and in intense situations.
