Job description

Upstate Veterinary Specialties is seeking an experienced, motivated, and passionate Veterinary Assistant Training Specialist to help shape the future of our medical support team. In this role, you'll be responsible for developing, training, and mentoring Veterinary Assistants across the hospital while collaborating with leadership to create engaging educational programs that promote excellence in patient care.

What You'll Do:

  • Train and mentor new Veterinary Assistants while supporting their progression through UVS's leveling program
  • Provide hands-on instruction, coaching, and real-time feedback to medical support staff
  • Observe workflows and provide on-the-spot coaching to reinforce best practices and hospital protocols
  • Develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), training guides, and educational resources
  • Assist with training on medical equipment, troubleshooting, and proper maintenance
  • Collaborate with managers, shift leads, and key technicians to monitor employee development and competency
  • Support experienced Veterinary Assistants in advancing their technical skills and professional growth
  • Help create presentations, videos, and digital learning materials for VetBloom and other educational platforms
  • Participate in hospital-wide training initiatives and collaborate with multiple specialty departments
  • Assist in developing "Train-the-Trainer" programs for departmental leads
  • Serve as a mentor and educational resource for Veterinary Assistants throughout the hospital
  • Evaluate individual learning styles and tailor training methods to maximize success
  • Participate in the rollout and education of the RECOVER CPR initiative for both hospital staff and the veterinary community
  • Maintain current policies, procedures, and training materials to support continuous improvement
  • Participate in committees, special projects, and ongoing hospital initiatives
  • Continue professional development through webinars, seminars, and cross-training opportunities within all UVS specialty services

What We're Looking For:

Experience & Education

  • Previous experience mentoring, training, or coaching others preferred
  • RECOVER Rescuer Certification preferred
  • Fear Free Certification preferred

Schedule:

  • Full-Time
  • Sunday–Wednesday | 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM
  • Flexibility required to work at least two Wednesday shifts per month from 5:00 PM – 3:00 AM to support evening training initiatives
  • Additional flexibility may be required to accommodate occasional evening and weekend training needs

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift and carry patients or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to sit, stand, bend, and move throughout the workday
  • Comfortable working extensively with computers, medical equipment, and training software
  • Ability to work in a veterinary hospital environment with exposure to animal odors, noise, and bodily fluids
