Can I become a bookkeeper with no experience?

Training bookkeepers can often start with little or no prior experience, as entry-level positions typically provide on-the-job training. Basic skills in math, attention to detail, and familiarity with accounting software like QuickBooks can help you get started, but gaining relevant certifications or courses can improve job prospects. Many employers value willingness to learn and accuracy over experience alone in entry-level roles.

What are some common responsibilities a Training Bookkeeper can expect during their first few months on the job?

As a Training Bookkeeper, your initial responsibilities typically include assisting with data entry, reconciling bank statements, handling invoices, and helping prepare basic financial reports under supervision. You'll often shadow experienced bookkeepers to learn company-specific processes and become familiar with internal accounting systems. Depending on the company, you may also support payroll processing and help maintain up-to-date client or vendor records. Over time, as you demonstrate accuracy and reliability, you can expect to take on more complex tasks and gain greater independence in your bookkeeping role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Training Bookkeeper position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Training Bookkeeper, you need a solid understanding of basic accounting principles, attention to detail, and a high level of numerical accuracy, with a high school diploma or associate's degree often preferred. Familiarity with bookkeeping software such as QuickBooks, Microsoft Excel, and accounting databases is highly beneficial and some employers may value certification like a Certified Bookkeeper (CB) credential. Strong organizational skills, willingness to learn, and effective communication enable successful collaboration with supervisors and team members. These combined skills ensure accurate financial records, support learning and development, and help maintain smooth business operations.

How can I train to be a bookkeeper?

To train as a bookkeeper, you can pursue a high school diploma or equivalent, then gain experience through entry-level positions or internships. Many bookkeepers learn on the job, but completing courses in accounting, bookkeeping, or using accounting software like QuickBooks can improve skills and job prospects. Certification is optional but can enhance credibility and career advancement.

Is AI replacing bookkeepers?

AI is automating certain tasks within bookkeeping, such as data entry and transaction categorization, which can increase efficiency. However, trained bookkeepers are still essential for tasks requiring judgment, analysis, and understanding of complex financial situations, making the role evolving rather than entirely replaced.

Is it worth training to be a bookkeeper?

Training to become a bookkeeper is valuable because it provides essential skills in accounting, data entry, and financial record management. Many employers prefer candidates with certification or training in bookkeeping software like QuickBooks, and ongoing education can improve job prospects and earning potential.

What is a Training Bookkeeper job?

A Training Bookkeeper is an entry-level role where individuals learn bookkeeping tasks while gaining hands-on experience. Responsibilities typically include recording financial transactions, reconciling accounts, and assisting with financial reports under supervision. This role helps develop essential accounting skills and software proficiency. It is ideal for those starting a career in bookkeeping or looking to enhance their financial record-keeping knowledge.

Responsibilities
Backyard Bookkeeper is looking for new senior bookkeepers to join our team. As a member of our accounting team, you will be keeping the books (data entry, reconciliation, review, financial statements) for a handful of regular clients, taking responsibility for enterprise clients with more complex financial reporting, as well as helping with incoming large projects that require cleanup or setup before we can transition them to "maintenance mode" bookkeeping.
This is a w-2 position and requires you to sign a non-compete agreement.
You will be working from home, although we have in-person team lunches quarterly and two annual company events. We are looking for residents of Utah, but we may consider out-of-state candidates on a case by case basis.
Qualifications
  • Daytime availability for meetings and client calls. Even though you can do most of the work whenever you want, you must have regular availability during regular business hours in order to communicate with your clients and participate in team meetings and training. In addition, our training is pretty hands-on, and there will be more required daytime Zoom meetings for the first 2-4 months of your employment.
  • Prepared to work a minimum of 20 hours per week. There is an option to increase to 35-40 hours per week over time.
  • Good at managing multiple ongoing projects across several clients.
  • Able to provide good, consistent service to clients who are sometimes assertive and demanding.
  • At least three years of full-charge accounting experience in a small business environment (including data entry, A/R, A/P, reconciliations, etc).
  • Thorough understanding of general accounting/double-entry bookkeeping principles, comfortable making journal entries correctly.
  • Excellent communication skills, including through email, phone, video chat, and other online media; be able to respond to messages within one business day.
  • Self-motivated, able to work effectively under deadlines without much supervision, excellent follow-through.
  • Have your own computer with a number pad, headset, and webcam, along with a good internet connection.
  • Type at least 50 WPM, not afraid of data entry (sometimes it gets tedious, but we do our best to mix it up with more interesting work).
  • Generally tech savvy on computers, Windows, Microsoft Office, and internet; able to learn new software quickly.

Additional Information/Benefits:
  • Flexible hours
  • On the job training and development
  • Work from the comfort of your own home
  • Interact with lots of interesting people and companies in varying industries
  • Have a variety of ongoing projects, rather than keeping the same routine every day and week
  • Mileage and home office expense reimbursements
  • Company IRA matching up to 3%
  • Each team has an in-person meeting (usually lunch or dinner) once a quarter - attendance is required in most cases
  • We hold two events each year in the SLC, Utah area: a company retreat in the fall and a holiday party in early December. Attendance is required at both events if you live within reasonable traveling distance (mileage is reimbursed). If not, the company will pay for a plane ticket to at least one of the semiannual get-togethers.
  • We currently have an office location in Sandy, Utah. You are welcome to take advantage of the office space if you prefer to work outside of your home office some of the time.

***One last note: we have an intensive, careful hiring process because we are dedicated to choosing the best qualified candidates who will work well within our company culture and provide excellent service to our clients. Please be prepared to have as many as five interviews before we make any final decision, and the whole process may take several weeks.
