Rapid Response Registered Nurse

The Rapid Response Team (RRT) at The George Washington University Hospital plays a critical role in early identification and intervention for patients experiencing acute clinical deterioration outside of the ICU. The Rapid Response RN is a highly skilled critical care nurse who responds to urgent clinical situations throughout the hospital, providing immediate assessment, stabilization, and coordination of care. Working in close collaboration with physicians, respiratory therapists, and bedside teams, the Rapid Response RN brings ICU-level expertise to non-ICU settings, helping prevent code events, reduce patient deterioration, and facilitate timely transfers to higher levels of care when needed.

Job Summary: Are you an experienced ICU Registered Nurse with strong clinical judgment and a passion for rapid intervention? The George Washington University Hospital is seeking a Rapid Response RN to join our critical care team. In this role, you will respond to urgent clinical situations across the hospital, utilizing advanced assessment skills and critical care expertise to stabilize patients and improve outcomes.

Responsibilities
  • Rapid Assessment & Intervention: Respond to rapid response calls and urgent clinical situations, performing immediate patient assessments and initiating appropriate interventions.
  • Clinical Expertise: Apply advanced critical care knowledge to manage acute changes in patient condition, including respiratory distress, hemodynamic instability, and altered mental status.
  • Stabilization & Escalation: Stabilize patients at the bedside and coordinate transfer to higher levels of care, including ICU admissions when indicated.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with interdisciplinary teams, including physicians, respiratory therapists, and bedside nurses, to ensure effective and timely patient care.
  • Code Support: Participate in code blue responses and provide support during resuscitation efforts.
  • Education & Mentorship: Provide real-time clinical guidance and education to bedside staff to enhance early recognition of patient deterioration.
  • Documentation: Maintain accurate and timely documentation of rapid response events, interventions, and patient outcomes.
  • Quality Improvement: Contribute to initiatives focused on patient safety, early warning systems, and reduction of preventable adverse events.
Qualifications

Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required or currently enrolled
Current Washington, D.C. RN license or eligibility
Minimum of 2 years of recent ICU or critical care experience strongly preferred
BLS and ACLS certification required
Strong assessment, communication, and decision-making skills
Ability to work effectively in high-pressure situations across multiple hospital units
