Position Qualification
Position Summary
The University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) is seeking an accomplished leader to serve as Vice Chair of Research in the Department of Radiology. This is a unique opportunity to shape the future of radiology through innovative research, interdisciplinary collaboration, and strategic leadership.
The successful candidate will be responsible for developing a nationally recognized research program, drive translational research initiatives, mentoring faculty and trainees in radiology research, and securing extramural funding to advance imaging science and improve patient outcomes.
Join a nationally recognized academic medical center with access to cutting-edge facilities, including collaboration with the Fred and Pamela Buffett Cancer Center- Nebraska's only NCI-designated cancer center in the state and one of just 73 nationwide.
The ideal candidate will be a fellowship-trained radiologist and appointed to an on-site dual-role faculty position with responsibilities equally divided between radiology research (0.5 FTE) and sub-specialized clinical practice (0.5 FTE). Candidates must demonstrate a proven record of exceptional clinical expertise in their radiology sub-speciality.
The department is particularly interested in candidates with expertise in theranostics, who would contribute clinically to a busy nuclear medicine practice, or those with a background in informatics or artificial intelligence, who would practice within a diagnostic radiology sub-specialty. Sub-specialty alignment may be prioritized based on departmental needs.
Research Position Highlights
Develop a nationally recognized research program in radiology with a focus on innovation and clinical interdisciplinary collaboration.
Collaborate with research divisions throughout the UNMC system including NCI designated Fred and Pamela Buffett Cancer Center
Manage translational research initiatives that combine basic science discoveries with clinical applications to improve patient care.
Secure extramural funding through grants and strategic partnerships.
Participate in departmental strategic planning, aligning research goals with the missions of the University of Nebraska Medical Center.
Mentor faculty, residents, fellows, and medical students in research methodologies, scholarly productivity, and career development.
Design, initiate, and lead investigator-driven imaging trials and develop competitive research proposals.
Provide support for clinical trials in radiology and interface between research coordinator and interdisciplinary teams.
Lead and further develop an established Tumor Metrics Lab in the Department of Radiology
Clinical Position Highlights
Sub-specialized focus: All radiology sub-specialties are welcome to apply and must demonstrate a proven record of exceptional clinical expertise
The department is especially interested in candidates with expertise in theranostics who can contribute to a busy nuclear medicine practice, as well as those with other diagnostic radiology sub-specialities with a background in informatics or artificial intelligence. An interest in tumor metrics / clinical response evaluation would also be of benefit.
Participate in tumor boards for multidisciplinary disease groups
Virtually no call: no primary evening/overnight/weekend shifts, only minimal back-up call for rare coverage during connectivity outages or to provide consultations on cases for our highly trained remote teleradiologists
Home workstations given to all faculty
Flexible, equitable, and transparent scheduling - can take vacation in half-day blocks, long-term vacation planning within the group, academic time built into the schedule, dedicated preparation times for all tumor boards, etc.
Salary and vacation: Highly competitive total compensation package including salary and time off when compared to Midwest private practices
Generous CME budget
Environment & Technology
The department values clinical excellence and high-level resident education but not at the expense of physician staff burn-out or the requirement for burdensome call responsibilities
Relaxed, collegial environment
State-of-the-art imaging equipment across CT, MRI, ultrasound, nuclear medicine, PET/CT, and diagnostic radiology
Supportive, progressive department culture focused on professional satisfaction and work-life balance
The University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) is committed to creating a learning environment free from discrimination and harassment. UNMC is dedicated to creating an environment where everyone feels valued, respected, and included.
