Job description

Overview
We are seeking a full-time Senior Compliance Engineer in our Kansas City HQ location, our Cary, NC or Phoenix, AZ location. In this role, you will be responsible for ensuring Garmin products meet applicable international regulatory, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), radio frequency (RF) and other product compliance requirements to support Garmin's global markets.
Senior Compliance Engineers at Garmin work closely with product development, electrical, mechanical, RF, software, manufacturing, quality, and other cross-functional teams to identify compliance requirements, assess risk, resolve technical issues, and develop effective compliance strategies. This role also contributes to the continued development of Garmin's compliance processes, test capabilities, and engineering expertise.
Essential Functions
  • Develop applicable regulatory, certification and market access requirements for Garmin's products in development based on product architecture, technologies, and targeted markets.
  • Develop compliance plans that support product development plans and global market access requirements.
  • Participate in design reviews and product development activities as the compliance representative. Lead compliance and/or safety design review meetings.
  • Plan, coordinate and oversee pre-compliance testing to identify EMC, RF or other compliance issues prior to formal certification.
  • Work with onsite and 3rd party test labs to execute Garmin's compliance strategies
  • Troubleshoot compliance failures and work with design teams to implement corrective actions.
  • Review test reports, technical documentation, Declarations of Conformity, homologation certificates, and other compliance deliverables for technical accuracy and completeness.
  • Effectively communicate complex regulatory and technical topics to engineering teams, project leadership, management, and partner labs.
  • Serve as a technical subject matter expert within an area of regulatory compliance, to include EMC, RF or other applicable regulatory areas.
  • Support Compliance leadership to develop, improve, and maintain compliance processes, procedures, and guidelines for the Compliance department.
  • Ability to contribute to regulatory and standards research on new technologies and global markets.
  • Mentor and provide guidance to less experienced Compliance Engineers.
  • Demonstrate Garmin's values and contribute to a collaborative engineering culture.

Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, RF Engineering, or related field AND a minimum of 5 years relevant experience OR an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Working knowledge of Electromagnetic Compatibility and RF test methodologies.
  • Experience performing or supporting compliance testing.
  • Experience with country certifications or homologations
  • Ability to explain and document regulatory and standards requirements
  • Demonstrated strong and effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills

Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with wireless and RF technologies such as Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, cellular/LTE/NTN, GNSS, satellite communications, or other radio technologies.
  • Experience with FCC part 15, ISED RSS standards, ETSI standards and applicable Radio Equipment Directive (RED) and EMC Directive (EMCD) requirements.
  • Experience with RF modules and integration of pre-certified radio modules into finished products.
  • Experience working directly with accredited laboratories, certification bodies, notified bodies, regulatory agencies, or similar external organizations.
  • Advanced degrees or technical training in Electrical Engineering, RF Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • iNARTE certification in EMC and/or Product Safety
  • Global market access activities
  • FCC/ISED grant applications
  • Previous work with circuit design of consumer products
