Job description

At Optima Engineering, an employee-owned MEP engineering consulting firm, we focus on delivering high-quality mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, and technology design solutions for buildings across the Southeast. Our projects include higher education, municipal, K-12, and commercial facilities. We are looking for a skilled and dedicated Electrical Engineer to join our team and help us continue to provide thoughtful and efficient designs for our clients
Requirements
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) in North Carolina
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in MEP building systems design for higher education, municipal, K-12, and/or commercial facilities.
  • Proficiency in Revit and/or AutoCAD required.
  • Strong communication, coordination, and analytical skills.

Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with project managers and multidisciplinary teams to develop electrical system designs from concept through construction.
  • Design lighting, power distribution, fire alarm, and low-voltage systems that meet project requirements and codes.
  • Prepare drawings, specifications, and calculations in Revit or AutoCAD.
  • Perform load calculations, circuiting, panel schedules, and equipment sizing.
  • Conduct field investigations, site observations, and existing system assessments.
  • Review submittals, respond to RFIs, and provide construction administration support.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary coordination and quality control reviews to ensure accurate, high-quality deliverables.
  • Assist in mentoring junior staff and sharing technical expertise across the team.

Skills
  • Strong understanding of electrical power distribution, lighting design, and fire alarm systems.
  • Familiarity with applicable codes and standards (NEC, IES, NFPA, ASHRAE, etc.).
  • Ability to produce complete electrical design packages including plans, one-lines, panel schedules, and details.
  • Experience with short-circuit, coordination, and arc flash studies preferred.
  • Knowledge of renewable energy and sustainable design principles a plus.
