Job Description

AECOM is seeking a highlight motivated Operations Technician for employment at a client facility located in Detroit, MI. The Operations Technician will support AECOM's team and their client in special event traffic operations management, working closely with venue representatives and law enforcement agencies, including sports games, concerts, and festivals. The position will report daily to on-site management and contribute to a team of traffic operations engineers, ITS technicians, and other traffic signal operations technicians. The applicant must be professional, self-motivated, resourceful, and able to prioritize multiple client requests. Communication skills are paramount in this position as the qualified candidate will be expected to work with a team on complex traffic signal systems and adapt to changing conditions in a real-time environment.

The Operations Technician serves as a dynamic role and the successful candidate will provide hands-on technical services and support for various traffic signal and intelligent transportation systems. The successful candidate will also be expected to communicate with key agency stakeholders, including law enforcement personnel, special event operations and parking staff, transit system representatives, and client engineers.

This position will be assigned to a PM Operations Shift. Hours are expected to cover approximately 4:00 PM to 12:30 AM, Monday through Friday; however, depending on need, these hours may be adjusted.

This position will report to the client facility full time. The working environment will be at a traffic operations center, where the successful candidate will be expected to successfully complete tasks at an agency workstation on a control room operations floor.

This position is expected to begin work on October 5, 2026.

Job Responsibilities

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Monitor traffic detectors, sensors, central systems, and automated traffic management systems to identify and manage changing roadway conditions, incidents, congestion, and planned/unplanned events.
  • Support operations for special events management and active operations
  • Monitor camera video and other information sources for the detection and verification of planned and unplanned events that impact traffic flow and safety.
  • Disseminate traffic information through various communication channels and software platforms, both to internal stakeholders and external groups, including the public.
  • Provide detailed shift logs and information pertaining to overnight special events, traffic incidents, and other occurrences for analysis and use by AM shift teams and engineers.
  • Create, maintain, and troubleshoot work orders for ITS equipment and service requests related to traffic operations.
  • Communicate effectively with engineers, technicians, transportation agency personnel, first responders, and other agency personnel.
  • Verify and compare deployed traffic signal timing plans for accuracy.
  • Deploy pre-designed traffic signal timing plans to address mobility concerns
  • Configure traffic signal systems, including software systems and hardware, as directed.
  • Develop graphs, charts, tables, maps, and descriptive statistics for traffic operations analysis.
  • Assist with data collection for studies and management needs.

  • BA/BS + 4 Years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education
  • Valid Michigan Driver's License
  • Must be able to operate a computer while sitting or standing at a desk for an entire shift.
  • Ability to view and analyze CCTV and other video monitoring equipment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in a dispatch environment or Emergency Response (911, Fire, etc) or previous transportation Traffic Management Center Operator/Dispatcher experience strongly preferred.
  • Ability to synthesize information from diverse sources including traffic signal systems, police and first responder communication systems, and camera monitoring systems
  • Technical literacy in English
  • Punctual attendance.
  • Able to work independently during overnight shifts
  • Experience with traffic signal controller software and detection systems
  • Understanding of traffic signal operations and traffic management relative to safety and mobility of travelers
  • International Municipal Signal Association Certifications including Traffic Signal Technician I or higher
  • Working knowledge of and skill set to utilize and operate traffic signal system software platforms and/or web-based applications
  • Associate's degree in Civil Engineering or a transportation-related field or a combination of education and practical experience in a similar field
