Job description

The Construction Assistant supports Habitat for Humanity of Clark & Floyd Indiana by assisting with all aspects of the homebuilding process, from site preparation through project completion. This role helps ensure safe, productive, and welcoming construction sites by working closely with the Director of Construction, construction staff, volunteers, and partner families (homebuyers).


The Construction Assistant plays a key role in teaching construction skills, leading volunteer teams, and troubleshooting technical challenges while fostering a positive, inclusive, and mission-driven worksite environment.


Key Responsibilities

  • Assist the Director of Construction with daily construction site operations from start to finish
  • Help ensure a safe worksite by promoting and enforcing safety standards and best practices
  • Teaches construction skills including but not limited to demolition and carpentry along with the appropriate use of equipment and tools through demonstrations, modeling skills, directing and monitoring performance and skill level
  • Teach basic construction techniques to volunteers and partner families
  • Demonstrate appropriate methods for handling technical construction challenges
  • Lead and support teams of skilled and unskilled volunteers
  • Troubleshoot construction issues and adapt plans as needed
  • Work collaboratively with construction staff and organizational leadership
  • Ensure volunteers and homebuyers are productively and meaningfully involved in construction activities
  • Insure implementation of all Habitat policies and procedures on the worksite.
  • Model Habitatโ€™s values of respect, teamwork, and service on the jobsite


Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Basic construction knowledge
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated leadership ability
  • Ability to teach skills and provide clear instruction
  • Ability to work effectively with people from diverse backgrounds
  • Strong teamwork skills
  • Valid driverโ€™s license
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Adaptability in a dynamic, hands-on environment
  • Flexible schedule, including weekday and Saturday availability


Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior construction background or hands-on construction experience
  • At least one year of leadership experience (formal or informal)


Work Environment & Physical Requirements

  • Working on construction sites in varying weather conditions
  • Regular standing, walking, lifting, and use of hand tools
  • Lifting up to 50 lbs independently
  • Performing physical tasks associated with residential construction
