As a TLLP, a common challenge is navigating the transition from academic training to real-world clinical practice while under supervision. Balancing the need to develop independent clinical judgment with the requirements and feedback from a supervising psychologist can be demanding. Additionally, TLLPs often face challenges in managing a varied caseload, adapting to different therapeutic modalities, and staying current with documentation standards. However, the supervised practice period is an invaluable opportunity to build confidence and competence in a supportive environment.

What is a TLLP?

A TLLP stands for Temporary Licensed Professional Counselor or Therapist, depending on the state. It is a provisional license that allows recent graduates with a master's degree in counseling or a related field to practice under supervision while they complete the required post-graduate clinical hours for full licensure. TLLPs are supervised by fully licensed professionals and cannot practice independently. The TLLP is a vital step in the process of becoming a fully licensed counselor or therapist.
