Position Summary 

Zachry Construction is seeking a Project Engineer to support project management and field operations on large-scale heavy civil construction projects. The Project Engineer will assist in planning, coordinating, and executing project activities, including cost control, scheduling, forecasting, change management, and overall project administration. This role requires strong communication and leadership skills, as well as the ability to work collaboratively to ensure all work complies with contract specifications, budget goals, and company standards. 


What You'll Do 

  • Maintain effective communication and collaboration with owners, vendors, subcontractors, and project team members. 
  • Draft and maintain written correspondence with owners and vendors. 
  • Coordinate the RFI process and assist field engineers and superintendents in preparing drafts for review. 
  • Supervise routing of drawings, transmittals, and approvals. 
  • Maintain project records related to progress, cost tracking, and material usage. 
  • Manage and mentor field engineering personnel, supporting their development and performance. 
  • Prepare and monitor project cost reports, forecasts, and projections. 
  • Organize, track, and process change orders and associated documentation. 
  • Review and update project schedules in coordination with the Project Manager and area staff. 
  • Identify and communicate project critical path activities to appropriate stakeholders. 
  • Update equipment schedules with input from the Project Manager and Superintendents. 
  • Maintain awareness of project status, field activities, and key performance indicators for review meetings. 
  • Cross-train engineers and field staff across multiple disciplines to foster collaboration and technical growth. 
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Project Manager.

What We're Looking For 

  • Minimum of 5 years of engineering experience in large heavy/highway construction projects. 
  • Experience working on projects valued at $25 million or more. 
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline preferred. 
  • Strong leadership, problem-solving, and analytical skills. 
  • Excellent organizational and prioritization abilities; detail-oriented and proactive. 
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office programs, including Excel and Word. 
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to convey technical information clearly. 
  • Ability to read, interpret, and apply construction drawings and specifications. 
  • Capable of working independently while maintaining a collaborative team approach. 
  • Strong understanding of project controls, scheduling, and cost management.
