What does a tiler do?

A tiler, also known as a tile setter, is a skilled tradesperson who installs tiles on floors, walls, ceilings, and other surfaces in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings. Their job includes measuring surfaces, cutting tiles to fit, applying adhesive, and ensuring tiles are properly aligned and spaced. Tilers work with a variety of materials such as ceramic, porcelain, stone, and glass to create decorative and functional surfaces. They are also responsible for grouting and finishing the seams between tiles, ensuring durability and aesthetic appeal.

Do tilers make good money?

Tilers can earn a competitive income, especially with experience, specialization, and the ability to work on large or complex projects. Wages vary by region and skill level, and many tilers are paid hourly or per project, with opportunities for overtime and additional earnings through certifications or advanced techniques.

How much should a tiler charge per hour?

What are some common challenges faced by tilers on job sites, and how can they be managed?

Tilers often encounter challenges such as working with uneven surfaces, unexpected substrate issues, or tight project deadlines. These can be managed by thorough site preparation, using appropriate leveling compounds, and collaborating closely with site supervisors and other trades to ensure project milestones are met. Additionally, maintaining clear communication with clients and being adaptable to on-site changes helps to ensure high-quality results and minimize rework. Teamwork and attention to detail are essential for overcoming these common obstacles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Tiler, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Tiler, you need strong manual dexterity, attention to detail, and a solid understanding of mathematics and measurements, often supported by an apprenticeship or vocational training in tiling. Familiarity with tools such as tile cutters, grout applicators, spirit levels, and laser leveling systems is typically required. Excellent time management, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication with clients and team members set top tilers apart. These skills ensure precise, high-quality tile installations that meet client expectations and industry standards.

Job description

FULL-TIME EXPERIENCED TILE SETTER / TILE INSTALLER
Whidbey Island | $35+/hr DOE | Full-Time

We are looking for a highly skilled, dependable Tile Setter to join our growing team. We take pride in delivering high-end craftsmanship and are seeking an experienced installer who values quality work, professionalism, and attention to detail.

This position is ideal for a tile professional who is confident in all phases of tile installation — from prep and waterproofing to layout and finish work — and who can consistently produce clean, accurate, high-quality results.

Our projects focus heavily on high-end residential work, where quality and craftsmanship matter. We prioritize doing the job right and maintaining a professional standard on every project.

The ideal candidate will have strong experience with residential and/or commercial tile installation, including traditional mud pans, waterproofing systems, floor prep, layouts, and finish work. Applicants should be comfortable working independently, maintaining organized and safe job sites, and consistently delivering professional-level craftsmanship.

Responsibilities:
• Measure, cut, and install tile accurately and efficiently
• Prepare surfaces and ensure proper layout and installation methods
• Install floors, walls, showers, backsplashes, and other tile applications
• Maintain clean, organized, and safe job sites
• Communicate effectively with project managers and team members
• Complete projects on schedule without sacrificing quality

Compensation & Benefits:
• $35.00/hour and up depending on experience and qualifications
• PTO, vacation, and holiday pay
• 401(k)
• Company vehicle or gas allowance

Work Environment:
Projects include both existing and new residential/commercial work throughout the Whidbey Island area. Travel is typically local and during normal business hours.

How to Apply:
Please submit your resume and a brief summary of your tile installation experience and qualifications.
