Job description

Job Purpose:

Under the direction of the Thrift Store Manager, or Thrift Store Assistant Manager, performs the day-to-day operational duties of the HSSA Thrift Store, including customer service, cash handling, retail merchandising, sorting, pricing, merchandise displays, and facilities cleaning. Maintains excellent customer service relations between Store staff and the public-at-large, HSSA employees and volunteers.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Working primarily as a part time Cashier, represents the Humane Society of Southern Arizona in a professional, polite and enthusiastic manner.
  • Provide welcoming service by greeting and assisting guests, and responding to guest inquiries and complaints to ensure excellent levels of customer service are maintained at all times.
  • Promote repeat business and word-of-mouth advertising through the building of excellent customer relations.
  • Enforce and maintain Store safety and cleanliness, and all health and security rules and procedures.
  • Assist with the daily cash handling, credit card transactions, bookkeeping, opening and closing the store.
  • Assist with Store merchandising, sorting, pricing, and inventory control.
  • Refer all customer service complaints to the store manager to ensure that Best Practices are followed and maintained.
  • Assist with acceptance of donations for store and ensure in-kind forms are filled out.
  • Assist with pick-up of donated items.
  • Assist with all store operations.
  • Perform customer service to the standards set forth in HSSA’s employee manual.
  • May train and supervise volunteers for Thrift Store.
  • Drive HSSA vehicle in performance of Thrift Store business.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions: Work is performed at retail space. Potential exposure to hazardous chemicals, sharp objects and zoonotic diseases during adoption events. Field conditions may be encountered. Able to lift up to 50 lb., long periods of standing, bending, stooping, reaching and working outdoors in differing climates.

  • Communication and Contact: The Thrift Store Associate communicates effectively both verbally and in writing with superiors, colleagues and individuals inside and outside of HSSA; has tact and above average communication and customer service skills. The Clerk must be able to maintain confidentiality and must be able to convey a positive and professional image to the public and employees.
  • Attendance and Dependability: The Thrift Store Associate can be depended on to report to work at the scheduled time; is seldom absent from work; can be depended on to complete work in a timely, accurate, and thorough manner and is conscientious about assignments.
  • Relationships with Others: The Thrift Store Associate works effectively and relates well with others including superiors, colleagues, and individuals inside and outside of HSSA and exhibits a professional manner in dealing with others and works to maintain constructive working relationships.

Qualifications/Educational Background:

  • High School graduate.
  • Retail sales experience preferred
  • Possession of a valid Arizona driver’s license and driving record acceptable to HSSA insurance carrier.
