Test Engineer Internship information

What is a test engineer internship?

A Test Engineer Internship is a temporary, hands-on role where interns assist in testing software or hardware products to ensure quality and functionality. Interns typically work with test plans, execute test cases, document results, and report bugs. They may use automated or manual testing techniques and collaborate with developers to improve product performance. This internship provides valuable experience in debugging, quality assurance, and test automation. It helps build technical and analytical skills essential for a career in software or hardware testing.

What types of projects or tasks can I expect to work on during a test engineer internship?

As a Test Engineer Intern, you'll typically be involved in tasks such as writing and executing test cases, identifying software bugs, and helping automate testing processes to improve efficiency. You may collaborate closely with software developers and other testers to ensure features function as intended and meet quality standards. Interns often participate in regular team meetings, contribute to test documentation, and may even help design new testing frameworks or scripts. This hands-on involvement helps you build both technical and teamwork skills, offering valuable exposure to real-world product development cycles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the test engineer internship position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Test Engineer Intern, you generally need a foundation in computer science or engineering, analytical problem-solving skills, and familiarity with software development and testing principles. Experience with test automation tools (such as Selenium or JUnit), scripting languages, and version control systems is often beneficial, though not always required. Strong attention to detail, effective communication skills, and a willingness to learn new technologies help candidates stand out. These combined skills ensure accurate testing, clear reporting, and a smooth integration within engineering teams, which are critical for delivering high-quality products.

Associate Test Engineer / Engineering Technician

Job Description

This role is ideal for a hands-on Associate Test Engineer or experienced engineering tech who enjoys building, troubleshooting, and improving products in a fast-paced medical device environment. You will work across the full product development lifecycle, from catheter fabrication and device assembly to testing, fixture design, and technical support. Collaborating closely with engineering, R&D, manufacturing, and quality teams, you will support the development and testing of innovative neurovascular products while gaining broad exposure to medical device design, mechanical systems, electronics, and manufacturing processes.

Responsibilities

  • Assemble, test, and troubleshoot prototype and production medical devices to support ongoing development and manufacturing activities.
  • Perform catheter fabrication, inspection, and evaluation to ensure components meet design and quality requirements.
  • Build, maintain, and improve test fixtures, jigs, and development equipment used in product verification and validation.
  • Conduct mechanical, electrical, and functional testing of devices and components, and accurately document test methods, results, and observations.
  • Support engineering teams with product development, validation activities, and process improvement initiatives throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Utilize hand tools, precision measuring equipment, microscopes, and laboratory equipment to build, inspect, and evaluate components and assemblies.
  • Assist with technical support activities, including root-cause investigations and product troubleshooting, to resolve issues and improve reliability.
  • Support 3D printing activities for prototypes, fixtures, and design iterations, contributing to rapid prototyping and design refinement.
  • Collaborate closely with engineering, manufacturing, and quality teams to execute work in a highly regulated medical device environment.
  • Maintain accurate documentation and records in accordance with company procedures and regulatory expectations.
  • Interpret schematics and use test equipment to perform electromechanical testing and validation of medical devices.
  • Participate in continuous improvement efforts by identifying opportunities to enhance test methods, fixtures, and processes.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS:

  • Minimum BS in Engineering and some project or internship experience in device lab testing, OR AS Degree and 3+ years of experience as an Engineering Technician, or in a related hands-on technical role.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude with demonstrated hands-on troubleshooting skills in electromechanical systems.
  • Experience working with hand tools, precision tools, and test equipment in a lab or manufacturing setting.
  • Ability to read and follow technical drawings, schematics, work instructions, and procedures.
  • Comfort assembling small, intricate components with a high degree of accuracy and consistency.
  • Proficiency in performing testing, including mechanical, electrical, and functional tests, and documenting results.
  • Strong attention to detail and a clear commitment to quality and compliance in a regulated environment.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills in English to collaborate with cross-functional teams and document work clearly.
  • Desire and motivation to learn and grow into broader engineering responsibilities over time.

NICE TO HAVE:

  • Experience with catheter fabrication, catheter assembly, or neurovascular device manufacturing.
  • Prior medical device technical support experience, including troubleshooting and field or internal support.
  • Experience using SolidWorks or other CAD software for fixture design, jigs, or tooling.
  • Hands-on experience designing or building fixtures, jigs, or tooling for testing and assembly.
  • 3D printing experience, particularly for prototypes, fixtures, and iterative design development.
  • Experience working with microscopes and precision inspection equipment for detailed component evaluation.
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Technology, or a related technical field.
  • Startup or R&D product development experience, especially in fast-paced, innovation-driven environments.
  • Interest in tinkering with new technologies and contributing to products with significant growth potential.

Work Environment

You will work in a newly built facility that combines both lab and office environments, providing a modern and well-equipped space for hands-on engineering work. The team currently consists of approximately 15 people, fostering a close-knit, collaborative atmosphere where you can work directly with engineering, R&D, manufacturing, and quality professionals. The environment supports extensive use of lab equipment, test fixtures, jigs, microscopes, precision measuring tools, and 3D printing technologies to develop and evaluate medical devices. The culture encourages flexibility, experimentation, and tinkering with new technologies, offering the opportunity to contribute to products in a company poised for rapid growth.
