What are some common challenges test drivers face during vehicle evaluations?

Test Drivers often encounter challenges such as adapting to rapidly changing test scenarios, accurately documenting subtle vehicle behaviors, and maintaining focus during repetitive or long driving sessions. They must also ensure strict adherence to safety protocols while pushing vehicles to their performance limits. Effective communication with engineers and development teams is crucial, as Test Drivers provide firsthand feedback that shapes vehicle improvements.

What is a test driver?

Test drivers are professionals who operate vehicles under various conditions to evaluate their performance, safety, and reliability. They work for automotive manufacturers, research organizations, or regulatory agencies to ensure that new or modified vehicles meet specific standards and requirements. Test drivers follow detailed protocols, document their findings, and may provide feedback to engineers and designers to help improve the vehicle's design and functionality.

How much does a test driver earn?

Test drivers typically earn between $40,000 and $80,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and the industry sector. Skilled drivers with specialized training or certifications may earn higher salaries, especially when working for major automotive or aerospace companies. What is the difference between Test Driver vs Quality Control Inspector?

AspectTest DriverQuality Control Inspector
Required CredentialsDriver's license, driving experienceInspection certifications, quality assurance training
Work EnvironmentTest tracks, automotive labsManufacturing plants, inspection sites
Industry UsageAutomotive testing, product evaluationManufacturing quality assurance

Test Drivers primarily evaluate vehicles' performance on roads or tracks, focusing on driving experience and vehicle handling. Quality Control Inspectors assess products for defects and compliance during manufacturing. While both roles ensure product quality, Test Drivers focus on operational testing, whereas Quality Control Inspectors concentrate on inspection and defect detection.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a test driver, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Test Driver, you need a valid driver's license, strong driving skills, and an understanding of automotive mechanics or vehicle systems. Familiarity with diagnostic tools, data logging equipment, and sometimes specialized driving certifications are typically required. Attention to detail, clear communication, and the ability to remain calm under pressure are important soft skills in this role. These skills and qualities ensure accurate vehicle assessments, safety during test procedures, and effective feedback to engineering teams.

Our ~16,800 employees create world-class solutions in communications, 5G, automotive, energy, quantum, aerospace, defense, and semiconductor markets for customers in over 100 countries. Learn more about what we do.

Our award-winning culture embraces a bold vision of where technology can take us and a passion for tackling challenging problems with industry-first solutions. We believe that when people feel a sense of belonging, they can be more creative, innovative, and thrive at all points in their careers.

Keysight’s Aerospace & Defense Custom Solutions (ADCS) team develops and delivers advanced custom test systems for some of the world's most innovative aerospace and defense organizations. Working at the intersection of RF engineering, automated test, systems integration, and customer collaboration, our engineers help solve complex challenges across Radar, Electronic Warfare (EW), Satellite Communications (SATCOM), and next-generation defense technologies.

Our team partners directly with customers to design, integrate, automate, and deploy complete test solutions using Keysight's industry-leading hardware and software platforms. From architecting automated RF test environments to integrating complex measurement systems and delivering customer-ready solutions, ADCS engineers play a critical role in helping customers validate and deploy mission-critical technologies.

This is an opportunity to work on highly visible programs, collaborate with leading aerospace and defense organizations, and solve challenging technical problems that span RF measurement, test automation, software development, and system-level integration.

Responsibilities

We are seeking an RF Test System Engineer to join Keysight's Aerospace & Defense Custom Solutions (ADCS) team. In this highly autonomous, customer-facing role, you will serve as a technical leader responsible for designing, integrating, and deploying advanced RF test systems for aerospace and defense customers.

You will work directly with customers to understand complex test challenges, architect automated test solutions, and deliver complete systems that combine Keysight's industry-leading hardware, software, and measurement technologies. Success in this role requires a strong foundation in RF measurements, automated test systems, systems integration, and customer collaboration.

The ideal candidate enjoys solving complex technical problems, working across hardware and software domains, and partnering with customers to transform requirements into innovative, mission-critical test solutions supporting Radar, Electronic Warfare (EW), Satellite Communications (SATCOM), and other advanced aerospace and defense applications.

  • Serve as the technical lead for the design, development, integration, and deployment of custom RF test systems and automated test solutions for aerospace and defense customers.
  • Architect and implement automated test solutions, including software development, device drivers, and test interfaces using industry-standard test and measurement platforms.
  • Design, integrate, and validate complete system-level solutions that combine RF instrumentation, signal routing, switching, software automation, and measurement technologies.
  • Partner directly with customers to understand requirements, translate technical challenges into practical solutions, and ensure successful project execution and customer satisfaction.
  • Lead and contribute to cross-functional projects involving engineering, program management, sales, customers, suppliers, and third-party partners.
  • Participate in customer design reviews, technical discussions, and milestone reviews to ensure solutions meet performance, schedule, and quality objectives.
  • Integrate Keysight hardware, software, and services into customer environments and ensure delivered solutions perform to specification.
  • Solve complex technical problems spanning RF measurements, test automation, hardware integration, software development, and system performance.
  • Provide technical expertise during pre-sales activities, helping customers evaluate approaches and identify the best test solutions for their applications.
  • Deliver customer training, technical consulting, and post-deployment support to maximize customer success and solution adoption.
  • Serve as a trusted technical advisor and primary customer interface throughout the project lifecycle, including occasional travel to customer sites.

This role is based onsite in Loveland, Colorado. Candidates must reside in the local area or be willing to relocate.
