The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
Position Summary
The Case Manager reports to the Associate Director of Case Management and serves as a key member of Disability Services Case Management team. Under general supervision, the Case Manager will provide case management services for students with a range of disabilities enrolled in programs on the Morningside campus. This position is integral to furthering accessibility and inclusion for students with disabilities at Columbia and will work closely with faculty and University partners to remove barriers to learning, co-curricular programs and resources.
This is an essential onsite role that requires occasional weekend and late evenings hours during times of peak operational volume. Some hybrid work options may be considered.
This position is not eligible for visa sponsorship. Applicants who require current or future visa sponsorship will not be considered.
Responsibilities
Case Management (75%)
  • Manage academic accommodations as defined by Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and the American with Disabilities Act for a large caseload of students registered with Disability Services.
  • In consultation with the Associate Director for Case Management, develop comprehensive disability case management strategies and facilitates accommodation and support services for students with a range of disabilities, support students through a variety of intervention, referrals, advocacy and follow-up services.
  • In consultation with the Associate Director, review highly sensitive and confidential disability documentation to determine disability status and need for accommodations.
  • Develop, implement, update, and evaluate accommodation plans with students and faculty.
  • Participate in case reviews to assess, plan, implement, coordinate, monitor, and evaluate students' accommodation needs.
  • Develop plans for individual students' academic and personal accommodations in concert with other advisors as needed.
  • Advise students on rights and responsibilities regarding academic accommodations, departmental policies and procedures, and University policies, disclosure, disability management, reasonability, and the grievance processes.
  • Document and maintain timely and accurate electronic student records, including records of activities with students, communications, documentation, and meeting notes.
  • Make appropriate referrals to university support services and off campus professionals as needed.
  • Responsible for ensuring accommodations letters are issued according to the departmental procedures.

Compliance/Awareness/Outreach (15%)
  • Maintain professional expertise in matters pertaining to federal and state regulations and policies affecting persons with disabilities, including Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and the American with Disabilities Act, including ADA standards and regulations pertinent to students with disabilities in higher education.
  • Provide ongoing technical assistance to faculty, class deans, and other advisors regarding the University's obligations to students with disabilities under the American with Disabilities Act.
  • Perform outreach to students, faculty, and staff and represents Disability Services at orientation and other events.
  • Serve as a liaison to other University departments and divisions to facilitate services for students with disabilities; interface regularly with faculty and University administrators, including Morningside schools, Columbia Health, Public Safety, Dining and Libraries on disability issues.

Other (5%)
  • Provide cross functional and other auxiliary accommodations services such as assisting with administration of exam accommodations during peak operational volume, coordinates course specific accommodations, note-taking, and classroom accommodations.
  • Maintain and develops a network of contacts and actively seek out and participates in professional development activities to ensure a continual flow of current and emerging information in disability services.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree and/or its equivalent experience in Counselor Education, Rehabilitation Counseling, Special Education or closely related field.
  • Minimum of 3 related experience required.
  • Knowledge of Section 504, ADA regulations, and other relevant laws pertaining to disability in higher education.
  • Familiarity with evaluating medical documentation to determine eligibility for academic and non-academic accommodations.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to, and understanding of working with students of diverse backgrounds, academic performance, and disabilities, experience with both traditional and non-traditional students.
  • Demonstrates ability to take initiative, use critical thinking, and exercise astute independent judgment in handling situations not covered by verbal or written instructions.
  • Able to handle a high-volume workload; manage concurrent demands, multiple stakeholders while working as part of a team.
  • Excellent analytical and organizational skills.
  • Position requires strong computer skills

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Counselor Education, Rehabilitation Counseling, Special Education or closely related field.
  • Experience in the provision of services for students with disabilities in a college or university setting.
