Job Title: School Bus Driver
Report to: Director of Transportation
Department: Transportation
Number of days: 176 Days
Position Summary:
Under close supervision, transport utilizing the most efficient means available pupils, faculty and other school approved bus rides between designated pick-up/drop-off points and school, activity trips, maintain order during all routes and trips, adhere to traffic and district safety rules for this position.
Qualifications/Job Requirements:
  • High School diploma or equivalency
  • Possesses a valid Oklahoma Driver's License
  • Skills in driving a school bus, as proven by passing a special performance test
  • Knowledge of applicable laws and regulations and school system policies and procedures
  • Ability to gain respect and cooperation of students, parents, administrative officials, and others; to maintain discipline; to pass a required bus driver's course; to communicate and Understand both oral and written instructions
  • Must be able to comply with the physical limits and essential duties for this position

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Obeys all traffic laws and safety regulations for school buses
  • Maintain discipline when students are on bus
  • Follows district and transportation discipline procedures
  • Provides written reports on a Bus Conduct Form the day of the infraction
  • to appropriate school personnel regarding inappropriate student behavior
  • which needs the attention of an administrator
  • Will document severe discipline infractions, as those described in the bus riders
  • application form, are documented on a Bus conduct form not later than at the
  • conclusion of the route, signed by Director/designee, if all possible so it can be
  • sent to the appropriate school authority
  • Follows district and transportation discipline procedures
  • Handles minor discipline problems by documenting when a seat is assigned to a student following the procedures outlined by the Director /Administrator
  • Pre-Trip Check: Will perform daily inspection of bus vehicle using the form provided (whether temporary or permanent vehicle) Appropriately turns in the inspection form daily reports immediately all problems which affect the safe transportation of students to the Director of Transportation
  • Bus Route:Maintains an accurate up to date physical description of the route as specified by the Director/designee, of all assigned routes with authorized bus stops, times and any other requested information; Runs the route as scheduled with stops and times; Implements approved changes to the route as needed to benefit the transportation students;
  • Waits for any student(s) who can be seen making an attempt to catch the bus; Picks up and discharges students only at authorized stops; Transports only authorized riders
  • Notifies the appropriate transportation personnel in case of mechanical failure of the bus or lateness of the bus on the bus route; Makes at least a 15 second stop on all authorized bus stops unless otherwise instructed by the appropriate transportation personnel;
  • Reports all route delays to the transportation office; Properly uses the two-way radios as outlined in the handbook keeping all radio communications professional, necessary, and courteous;
  • Accidents: Reports all employment related accidents (personal, student, or vehicle) to the appropriate transportation personnel as soon as possible on the day of occurance by no later than when departing transportation following the conclusion of job responsibilities for the day. Completes all related reports as needed or requested with the time frame allocated. Completes and properly turns in all reports, forms, and/or other information as requested.
  • Adheres to and properly enforces all district policies.
  • Understands and is in compliance with the Transportation Handbook as well as any other changes implemented by the Administrator/Director of Transportation.
  • Checks bus before each operation for mechanical defects; keeps assigned bus clean.
  • Will maintain a valid Oklahoma DCL License and will maintain licensing required by the State Department of Education.
  • Will attend all scheduled meetings and in service training sessions.
  • Will promote a positive image through proper dress, conduct, school bus operations. And dealing with parents, patrons, and school personnel.
  • Will maintain a clean and safe environment for students transported.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
