What is a temporary merchandiser?

A Temporary Merchandiser is responsible for setting up product displays, restocking shelves, and ensuring that merchandise is presented according to company standards. This role is often seasonal or project-based, typically lasting for a few weeks or months. Temporary Merchandisers may work in retail stores, grocery stores, or other locations, helping to maintain product visibility and appeal. The job requires attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to lift and move products as needed.

What does a temporary merchandiser do?

As a Temporary Merchandiser, your day will typically involve traveling to assigned retail locations, setting up product displays according to pre-set plans, restocking inventory, and ensuring that shelves are clean and organized. You may also be responsible for rotating stock, checking product expiration dates, and reporting inventory issues to store or brand representatives. You’ll often work independently, but will regularly communicate with store staff and supervisors to coordinate tasks. The role may require early morning or evening hours to complete projects outside of peak shopping times, and you can expect a fast-paced environment where priorities shift based on retailer needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a temporary merchandiser?

To thrive as a Temporary Merchandiser, you need strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the physical ability to handle merchandise, often with a high school diploma or equivalent as the standard qualification. Familiarity with planogram software, inventory systems, and handheld scanners is frequently required for tracking stock and setting up displays accurately. Excellent communication, flexibility, and the ability to work independently are valuable soft skills in this position. These competencies ensure merchandise is correctly displayed, shelves are well-stocked, and sales goals are supported through effective visual presentation.

Can I be a temporary merchandiser with no experience?

Temporary merchandiser positions often do not require prior experience, as training is typically provided on the job. Employers look for reliability, basic physical ability, and willingness to learn, making it possible for newcomers to start in this role. Having good communication skills and attention to detail can also be beneficial.

About BibliU

BibliU is an award-winning, technology-led B2B company transforming the $65bn educational content industry. With a 90% CAGR the past 5 years, we are just getting started. We've cracked the code on Day 1 access to affordable digital course materials for students, while delivering comprehensive campus store solutions that foster human relationships, and increase our stickiness in the world of AI.

The result? Measurable impact: 10% higher student retention, 1-point GPA increases, and partnerships with 170 universities serving 600,000 students each year.

We've fundamentally changed how universities procure, distribute, and manage learning content. We partner with 4,000+ publishers, including Pearson, Oxford University Press, and Wiley to deliver content to universities, and provide rich engagement data and interactive tools like quizzes that help students actually learn.

Here's what makes our story compelling:

Founded in late 2015 as an Oxford University spin out, we've grown explosively with 90% CAGR over the last five years, including 65% in FY25, reaching $100m in annual revenue. Our Series B raised $23m led by Nesta Impact Investments (with Guinness Asset Management, Stonehage Fleming, and Oxford Sciences Enterprises). In late 2023, we acquired Texas Book Company (now 'BibliU Campus') to become the only fully vertically integrated player in the market, driving US organic growth which now represents 90% of our business.

We're hungry for more. We're actively building our M&A pipeline as we compete head-to-head against legacy bricks-and-mortar providers to improve the faculty and student experience while boosting the financial sustainability of universities.

Our culture is collaborative, high-growth, and agile. You'll join an experienced and motivated executive team with backgrounds from Instructure (Canvas) and other successful edtech companies with exit experience. We operate as a distributed team across the UK and US, with offices in London.
