What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Temporary Maintenance worker, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Temporary Maintenance worker, you need basic mechanical aptitude, general repair skills, and often a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with hand and power tools, maintenance management systems, and sometimes OSHA safety certifications are typically required. Reliability, problem-solving ability, and good communication help you stand out in this role. These skills and qualities are essential to efficiently address facility issues, ensure safety, and maintain smooth day-to-day operations.

What are the typical work schedules and expectations for someone in a Temporary Maintenance role?

Temporary Maintenance positions often require flexibility, as work schedules can vary based on the employer's immediate needs. Shifts may include early mornings, evenings, or weekends, especially if urgent repairs or seasonal upkeep are required. Job seekers should be prepared for a fast-paced environment where priorities can shift quickly. Temporary maintenance staff frequently work under the supervision of a facilities manager and collaborate with other maintenance personnel to complete tasks efficiently. Attention to detail, adaptability, and strong communication skills are important for success in these roles.

Job description

Turn is the most intense stretch of the year. One group of residents moves out, a new group moves in, and every unit in between has to go from "lived in" to "looks brand new" - fast. That's where you come in: hands-on, all-hands-on-deck work that makes a resident's day-one walk-in feel perfect.
No experience required. Show up ready to work and we'll teach you the rest.
What you'll do
Each day you'll get a list of units, common areas, or projects. Depending on the day:
  • Trash-outs & hauling - clear out units, load dumpsters, reset spaces to a blank slate
  • Make-ready & punch lists - light bulbs, air filters, smoke detector batteries, blinds, hardware, minor fixes
  • Paint & touch-up - patch, prep, and paint units and common areas
  • Cleaning & detailing - sweep, mop, floor care, and the deep-clean work that makes a unit feel new
  • Furniture install - unload, assemble, and place (yes, Allen wrenches and lifting)
  • Grounds & move-in day - keep the property sharp and lend a hand when families arrive

You won't do all of it every day - but be ready to do any of it.
Requirements
  • Reliable - you show up, on time, ready to go
  • Not afraid of physical work or getting your hands dirty
  • Take direction well and move fast without cutting corners
  • A team player who treats residents and the crew with respect

Temporary, seasonal role tied to turn - typically a [2-4 week] stretch with long days and some weekend work at peak. No benefits. You should be able to lift up to 50 lbs, stay on your feet for long stretches, and go up and down ladders and stairs throughout the day, including in heat and tight spaces.
