Position: Temporary Accountant (6-Month Assignment) Location: Johnston, IA (Hybrid) Reports To: Director of Finance Classification: Non-Exempt
About Us The Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL) is a nonprofit, government-benefit organization that supports lotteries across the U.S. We're best known for games like Powerballยฎ.
Position Summary The Multi-State Lottery Association is seeking a detail-oriented and adaptable Temporary Accountant to support our finance team for a six-month assignment. This role is responsible for providing essential accounting and financial support, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, travel claims, and general accounting functions.
The Accountant will work closely with the Director of Finance and collaborate with various departments to ensure accurate financial reporting and efficient day-to-day operations. This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated professional who thrives in a collaborative, small organization environment and is ready to contribute quickly.
Key Responsibilities
Accounts Payable & Expense Management
  • Review invoices for accuracy, completeness, and proper documentation
  • Ensure transactions comply with internal financial policies and procedures
  • Code expenses and enter invoices into the accounting system
  • Resolve discrepancies related to invoices and payments
  • Support month-end close activities

Travel & Expense Review
  • Validate expense claims for accuracy and proper documentation
  • Confirm mathematical accuracy and policy compliance
  • Investigate and resolve discrepancies with employees

General Support
  • Provide financial data and reporting support to internal teams
  • Assist with special projects and ad hoc accounting tasks
  • Take on additional responsibilities as needed to support organizational goals

Experience, Education, and Required Skills/Abilities
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field (preferred), or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 1-3 years of accounting or accounts payable experience
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Solid understanding of accounting principles
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (especially Excel)
  • Strong data entry and data management skills
  • Effective communication and problem-solving abilities
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple deadlines
  • High level of professionalism, discretion, and confidentiality

Estimated Pay Range: $35-$40 per hour The actual salary offer will carefully consider a wide range of factors, including your skills, qualifications, experience, and other relevant factors.
