What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Temporary Girl Scout Camp Counselor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Temporary Girl Scout Camp Counselor, you generally need experience working with children, basic first aid knowledge, and a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with camp management tools, outdoor activity equipment, and certifications such as CPR/First Aid are typically required. Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills help counselors create a positive, supportive camp environment. These skills are essential to ensure camper safety, foster personal growth, and provide engaging camp experiences.

What are some common challenges faced by staff working at a temporary Girl Scout camp, and how can they be managed?

Staff at a temporary Girl Scout camp often encounter challenges such as adapting to a fast-paced, outdoor environment, managing group dynamics among campers, and quickly learning camp routines and safety protocols. To manage these challenges, it's important to communicate openly with team members, stay organized, and be flexible in responding to changing situations. Many camps offer training before the season starts, which helps staff build confidence and prepare for common scenarios they might face on the job.

These jobs are ideal for individuals who enjoy working with youth, value teamwork, and have an interest in the outdoors. Most positions last a few weeks to a couple of months, depending on the camp's schedule.

Job description

Professional Girl Scout

Were you a Girl Scout growing up? (It's ok if you weren't!)

Do you love the outdoors?

How about special events?

Do you love science, technology, engineering and math?

Do you buy a case of Thin Mints or Samoas each cookie season? (We're not judging!)

If the answer to any of these questions is "yes," you might want to consider a professional career in Girl Scouting!

But what if the right opportunity isn't posted right now? Fear not! You can still put yourself on our radar.

How? Simply apply to this posting. HR is committed to reviewing applicants to this general posting on at least a monthly basis.

A little about our Team On The Move (TOTM):

Our team consists of various departments as follows:

Executive

  • Chief Executive Officer
  • Chief Operating Officer
  • Chief Financial Officer
  • Vice President of Human Resources
  • Executive Administrator
  • HR Associate

Led by the Chief Executive Officer, this team is primarily responsible for the stewardship of the Council's human, material and fiscal assets, as well as policies, procedures and practices. Don't let the serious text here fool you; this team has dressed up as the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for Halloween, loves a good round of lunch Bingo, and can customize anything with a Cricut!

Mission Delivery

  • Senior Vice President of Mission Delivery
  • Director of Product Sales
  • Director of Girl Experience
  • STEM Program & Education Manager
  • Outdoor Program & Education Manager
  • Girl Experience Managers
  • Seasonal Camp Staff
  • Product Programs Coordinator

Led by the Senior Vice President of Mission Delivery, if you think of Girl Scouts and you think cookies, or incredible leadership development programming - you are thinking of this team. That's why the department name Mission Delivery seems super on point! This team is almost always ready with a joke, loves to bake and break bread, and sincerely looks forward to meeting the new stuffed animals and rewards that accompany each cookie season. In addition, the Girl Experience team leads and coordinates all girl-related programming, from STEMapalooza, to Summer Resident Camp, to Mall Madness, to Move Mania. Ultimately, this team is responsible for delivering THE Girl Scout Leadership Experience to girls in our community. The Girl Scout Leadership Experience is a collection of engaging, challenging and fun activities like earning badges, going on awesome trips, selling cookies, exploring science, getting outdoors and doing community service projects. And it's all based around four pillars: (1) science, technology, engineering and math; (2) outdoors; (3) life skills; and, (4) entrepreneurship. Girl Experience Managers develop educational programming around these pillars, both internally, and with external community partners. It has some pretty fun perks, too! Members of this team have been paid to make candy sushi, to try their hand at flying a plane when researching aeronautical program opportunities and have witnessed rockets take off from Kennedy Space Center! Pass the space-safe freeze-dried ice cream?

  • Director of Membership & Community Partnerships
  • Director of Member Experience
  • Associate Director of Community Programs
  • Volunteer Training Manager
  • Community Managers

The Member Experience team is the voice of Girl Scouts. If you have ever called or e-mailed us to find out about troop camp training opportunities, travel forms, or anything else, chances are you have spoken or corresponded with a member of this team. You can literally hear their smile when speaking to them and we absolutely adore that fact! Trust us when we tell you that this team will always win every baking competition, is super creative at coming up with fun ways to introduce new girls and parents to Girl Scouting, loves to write a good old fashioned thank you note to volunteers, and makes sure that our laptops work no matter where we are, to boot!

Led by the Vice President of Advancement, the Advancement team is responsible for special events, stewardship, grants and community partnerships. Finance

  • Director of Retail Sales
  • Accountant
  • Finance Associate
  • Retail Associates

Led by the Chief Financial Officer, this team is small, and this team is mighty. The retail team runs our Girl Scout shops, with one located in Jupiter and the other in Tamarac. It's hard to enter one of these stores and not buy something. From flamingo key chains to shirts for Dad to badges and patches galore, we love to see our members shopping and smiling. Known for producing detailed budgets, running payroll like clockwork, and for receiving flawless audits, they love numbers, rulers, and back-up documentation. And like most professional Girl Scouts, they are so much more than what they do at the office! This group is an active bunch that that is involved in paddle boarding, Tae Kwan Do and more!

We do this through voluntary diversity, equity and inclusion lunch and learns, required annual professional development goals, employee recognition preference questionnaires, workiversary mile "stones," on-site yoga classes, an annual Health & Wellness Day, and more. In short, we take care of our team, so they can focus on building the next generation of changemakers, community leaders and CEO's.
