What Does a Temporary Civil Engineer Do?

As a temporary civil engineer, you complete all of the responsibilities of a civil engineer, except you are under contract for an individual project. Your duties may involve designing or evaluating a building plan, supervising construction, providing maintenance for infrastructure systems, obtaining permits, identifying cost estimates, using design software, and analyzing data before and during the building process. You may also conduct fieldwork to inspect concerns and recommend plan revisions to supervisors. You can work for private or public businesses and companies, or perform freelance services. Some industries you may work in include construction, structural, geotechnical, and transportation engineering.

Are civil engineers still in demand?

Civil engineers are generally in steady demand due to ongoing infrastructure projects, urban development, and maintenance needs. The profession requires skills in design, project management, and familiarity with tools like AutoCAD and GIS, which support employment stability across various regions.

What engineers make $500,000?

Highly experienced senior engineers in specialized fields such as petroleum, aerospace, or software engineering can earn $500,000 or more annually, especially with bonuses, stock options, or in leadership roles. Job description

Job Title: Project Engineer (Heavy Industrial & Infrastructure)
Role Overview
We are seeking a detail-oriented Project Engineer to join our on-site construction management team for high-complexity heavy industrial projects. In this role, you will be the technical backbone of the project, ensuring that engineering plans, contractual obligations, and quality standards are executed with precision in the field.
This is a field-centric position requiring a professional who is equally comfortable in the construction trailer and on the job site. You will own the "day-to-day" of project delivery-from managing submittals and tracking cost/budget performance to performing quality audits and coordinating multi-discipline contractors. If you are a proactive problem-solver who enjoys high-intensity, deadline-driven environments, this is the role for you.
Key Responsibilities
Field Execution & Construction Management
• On-Site Oversight: Provide direct support to the construction management team. Inspect work progress to ensure total conformance with engineering drawings, technical specifications, and safety standards.
• Multi-Discipline Coordination: Manage workflows across civil, structural, mechanical, and electrical disciplines. Act as the primary technical resource for field teams, providing RFI and submittal clarification in real-time.
• Quality Assurance (QA/QC): Develop and implement quality control procedures. Conduct audits, maintain work-controlling documentation, and ensure corrective measures are implemented immediately in cases of non-compliance.
Contract & Cost Controls
• Financial Stewardship: Analyze and monitor job costs, production budgets, and income quantities. Prepare, audit, and approve progress billings and cash flow projections.
• Commercial Support: Assist the Lead Project Manager in commercial administration, including the pricing and negotiation of change orders, claims, and contractual adjustments.
• Schedule & Document Control: Monitor project schedules, updating progress logs to identify potential delays before they impact the critical path. Maintain accurate, audit-ready project correspondence and filing systems.
Stakeholder Collaboration
• Technical Liaison: Serve as the point of contact for internal/external stakeholders, suppliers, and client representatives. Facilitate weekly progress meetings, manage action-item logs, and draft executive-level updates.
• Documentation & Reporting: Prepare technical reports, design modifications, and project status presentations that provide clear, data-driven insights to ownership.
Qualifications & Requirements
Minimum Qualifications
• Education: Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil/Mechanical/Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field.
• Experience Baseline: Minimum of three (3) to five (5) years of experience in related heavy industrial or infrastructure construction environments.
• Technical Mastery:
oProven experience managing large-scale, complex projects with significant labor and non-labor cost components.
oDemonstrated ability to read, analyze, and execute duties based on complex technical specifications, shop drawings, and engineering schematics.
• Soft Skills: Exceptional leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills. Ability to work independently and manage competing priorities in a fast-moving field environment.
• Software: High proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Project).
Operational Expectations
• This is an on-site role requiring a minimum of 5 days per week at the field assignment/base of operation.
• Flexibility in working hours is required to support project execution and critical timelines.
