As of Jun 4, 2026, the average hourly pay for temporary book editor in the United States is $28.75, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $22.12 and $31.97 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Temporary Book Editor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Temporary Book Editor, you need strong language proficiency, attention to detail, and experience in editing or publishing, often supported by a degree in English, communications, or a related field. Familiarity with editing software such as Microsoft Word, Adobe Acrobat, or editorial management systems is typically required. Excellent time management, adaptability, and clear communication help editors meet tight deadlines and collaborate effectively with authors and publishing teams. These skills ensure the delivery of high-quality, error-free manuscripts within limited timeframes, which is critical for successful publication cycles.

What are some unique challenges faced by temporary book editors compared to permanent staff editors?

Temporary book editors often need to quickly adapt to different publishing house styles, editorial guidelines, and project management systems. Since assignments are typically short-term, there's limited time to build rapport with authors and in-house teams, making communication and feedback cycles more condensed. Additionally, temporary editors must efficiently manage multiple projects at various stages, often juggling tight deadlines with the need to uphold high editorial standards. This role requires flexibility, strong self-management skills, and the ability to produce quality work with minimal onboarding.

What does a Temporary Book Editor do?

A Temporary Book Editor is a professional hired on a short-term basis to review, revise, and improve manuscripts before publication. Their responsibilities typically include correcting grammar and spelling, ensuring consistency in style and tone, and providing feedback to authors. They may also fact-check information, check references, and collaborate with other editorial staff. Temporary Book Editors are often brought in to help meet tight deadlines or to cover for permanent staff during busy periods.

  • Attention to detail, ability to focus for long periods, ability to communicate clearly, and strong organizational and time-management skills
  • Adherence to a robust evangelical theology in the historic stream of the Reformation-that is, broadly Reformed in line with the doctrinal DNA of Crossway's publishing ministry-and willingness to affirm Crossway's Statement of Faith, Statement of Classic Reformation Orthodoxy, and statements on Human Sexuality and Complementarity

Publishing Ministry Commitment:
Commitment to the Crossway publishing ministry and vision, as summarized in the following statement of purpose: By God's grace: (a) to bring men, women, and children to Christ as their Lord and Savior; (b) to help individual Christians and the church grow in knowledge and understanding of the Bible and the Christian life; (c) to bear witness to God's Truth, Beauty, and Righteousness, and the Lordship of Christ in every area of life; and (d) to glorify our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in every way.
Personal Qualities:
A love for God's Word and His church. Committed to an evangelical, historic Reformation understanding of the Bible, the gospel, and Christian doctrine. A genuine faith in Jesus Christ as one's Lord and Savior, and active participation in a local church. Pleasing personal demeanor with a willing, servant's heart. Creative, energetic, organized, timely, excellence in execution.
Benefit Program:
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision plans for full time employees after 30 days of employment with employer contribution to costs

Most candidates can expect to fall at the midpoint of the range, with placement determined by experience, skills, and demonstrated ability for the position.
