Duties and Responsibilities
(*Denotes Essential Functions)
  • *Performs site investigations & feasibility studies & provides technical consultation & budget estimates in response to requests for alteration, new construction, & energy management of electrical power & lighting systems.
  • *Performs load & lighting calculations & applies technical design skills, including drafting, to create working drawings & specifications for power & lighting systems.
  • Energy Management - Power & Lighting: Performs engineering service in the implementation of energy conservation measures. Performs energy audits of building system & operations & provides technical assistance in evaluation energy conservation measures.
  • *Reviews engineering studies & design proposals of consulting engineers to insure compliance with University standards.
  • *Project Management: Coordinates activities required to insure the smooth flow of electrical power & lighting systems projects during design phase.
  • Serves as a spokesman, interpreter, and dispatcher of information among consultants, contractors and the University community.
  • *Reviews system designs, specifications and material submittals of consultants and contractors for compliance with University standards.
  • *Provides technical assistance to trades personnel and University for troubleshooting work, minor renovation projects and preventative maintenance program development.
  • *Reviews design and provides technical guidance for electrical portion of Capital Improvement Projects (CIP) and repair and Maintenance (R&M) projects managed by UH engineers and architects.
  • *Performs periodic on-site inspection of electrical and related work to ensure conformance to the design and proper workmanship.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
  1. Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Electrical Engineering or related field and 3 year(s) of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for Electrical Engineering; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.
  2. Considerable working knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in the area of Electrical Engineering as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving concepts, principles and methodologies.
  3. Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations and theories and systems associated with Electrical Engineering.
  4. Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective, innovative and timely manner.
  5. Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.
  6. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.
  7. Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer, apply word processing software.
  8. If applicable, for supervisory work, demonstrated ability to lead subordinates, manage work priorities and projects, and manage employee relations.
  9. Ability to define project scopes, prepare comprehensive & technical engineering reports, design constructible & technically sound systems, review & recognize problem areas, & organize necessary procedures.
  10. Ability to draft or utilize a computer aided drafting system effectively.
  11. Understanding of commercial & industrial construction methods, techniques, practices & management skills.

Desirable Qualifications
  1. 2 years in power & lighting design. Knowledge of computer hardware and software application to electrical power and lighting design and data tabulation.
  2. 1 year in plan review or project management or 2 years in commercial and industrial electrical construction.
