Temporary Accounting information

What is temporary accounting?

Temporary accounting refers to accounting positions that are filled for a limited period, often to cover staff absences, manage busy periods, or complete specific projects. These roles can range from entry-level bookkeeping to specialized accounting functions. Temporary accountants perform many of the same duties as permanent staff, such as preparing financial statements, managing accounts payable and receivable, and assisting with audits. Hiring temporary accounting professionals allows businesses to maintain accurate financial records without committing to long-term employment. It can also provide accountants with diverse work experiences and networking opportunities.

What are the typical expectations for onboarding and training when starting a temporary accounting position?

In a temporary accounting role, onboarding and training are often streamlined to get you up to speed quickly. You can expect a brief orientation focused on company-specific accounting systems, key procedures, and compliance requirements. While you may not receive extensive long-term training, supervisors and team members are usually available to answer questions as you acclimate. Being proactive in learning and asking clarifying questions helps you integrate efficiently and contribute effectively from the start.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a temporary accountant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Temporary Accountant, you need a solid understanding of accounting principles, experience with financial reporting, and often a degree in accounting or related field. Proficiency in accounting software such as QuickBooks, SAP, or Excel is typically required, and certifications like CPA can be advantageous. Strong attention to detail, adaptability, and effective communication are important soft skills for this role. These skills and qualities are essential to quickly integrate into new teams, ensure accurate financial records, and maintain compliance during short-term assignments.

What is the difference between Temporary Accounting vs Bookkeeper?

About the role:
The Staff Accountant supports PDQ's accounting operations, with primary ownership of assigned month-end close reconciliations and the day-to-day accounts payable and accounts receivable cycle. Reporting to the Accounting Manager, you'll help keep our books accurate and our close on schedule as PDQ scales. This is a strong role for an accountant who wants broad exposure across the general ledger, revenue, and the cash cycle in a growing SaaS business running NetSuite. • Process accounts payable: enter vendor bills, verify approvals and coding, and prepare payment runs
  • Manage accounts receivable: generate customer invoices, apply cash receipts, and follow up on outstanding balances
  • Support accurate revenue recording and billing in coordination with the revenue team
  • Maintain organized documentation and support schedules for audit and internal review
  • Partner with cross-functional teams including FP&A, Payroll, and external partners such as KPMG
  • Contribute to team initiatives, process improvements, and strategic goals
  • Support continuous improvement through feedback, learning, and innovation

We're looking for people who have:
Must Have:
  • 1+ years of accounting experience, or a completed accounting internship plus relevant coursework
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
  • Working knowledge of core accounting concepts, including the month-end close and account reconciliations
  • Proficiency in Excel or Google Sheets, including formulas, pivot tables, and lookups
  • Attention to detail and the ability to meet recurring close deadlines

Nice to Have:

  • Exposure to a SaaS or subscription business model
  • Familiarity with AP or AR automation tools
  • Hands-on experience using AI tools to automate or streamline accounting work
  • Progress toward a CPA license

Who you are:
  • Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.
  • Adaptability and comfort working in evolving environments.
  • Attention to detail and a commitment to delivering quality work.
  • Curiosity, initiative, and a continuous learning mindset.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Eager to use AI and automation to eliminate manual work and improve how the team operates.

Why You'll Love Working at PDQ:
PDQ offers all of the great perks and benefits you'd expect from working at a very cool tech company, and even some you might not expect, including:
  • 4-Day Work Week
  • Equity Participation
  • Managers who champion professional development
  • 100% Premium Coverage for medical, dental and vision for you and your dependents
  • 100% Premium Coverage for Short Term Disability, Long Term Disability, Life, and AD&D Insurance
  • Company Match of the first 6% of your employee deferrals
  • Flexible Paid Time Off Policy that treats you like the adult that you are
  • Health Savings Account (HSA) and wellness incentives
  • Quarterly Company Values Award (team member nominated)

Equal Opportunity Employer
PDQ is proud to be an equal opportunity workplace and do not discriminate on the basis of sex, race, color, age, pregnancy, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, religion, national origin, ancestry, citizenship, marital status, military or veteran status, genetic information, disability status, or any other characteristic protected by federal, provincial, state, or local law.
