Temp Software Developer information

How does a Temp Software Developer typically integrate into existing development teams and projects?

As a Temp Software Developer, you are often brought in to support ongoing projects or fill in resource gaps, so integrating quickly with the existing team is crucial. You can expect to receive a project overview and access to documentation, but you may need to be proactive in asking questions and seeking clarification. Collaboration with permanent developers, QA engineers, and sometimes product managers is common, often through regular meetings or code reviews. Flexibility and adaptability are key, as you may switch between tasks or projects based on shifting priorities. This role provides a great opportunity to learn diverse codebases and work styles, which can enhance your skills and future employability.

What are Temp Software Developers?

Temp Software Developers are programmers hired on a temporary basis, often for a specific project or to cover short-term staffing needs. They perform many of the same tasks as permanent software developers, such as writing code, testing applications, and collaborating with teams. Temp roles can last anywhere from a few weeks to several months and offer flexibility for both employers and developers. These positions are common in industries that need to quickly scale up development capacity or address temporary skill gaps.

What is the difference between Temp Software Developer vs Contract Software Engineer?

AspectTemp Software DeveloperContract Software Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires a bachelor's degree in computer science or related fieldSimilar credentials, often with additional certifications depending on project needs
Work EnvironmentUsually works on-site or remotely for a short-term period, often within a company's existing teamWorks on a contractual basis, often remotely, with project-specific tasks
Employer & Industry UsageCommonly hired through staffing agencies or temp agencies for various industriesHired directly or through agencies for project-based work in tech and software development

Both roles involve short-term software development work, requiring similar skills and credentials. The main difference lies in their employment setup: Temp Software Developers are typically hired through staffing agencies for temporary roles, while Contract Software Engineers often work on specific projects for a fixed term, sometimes with more independence. Understanding these distinctions helps in choosing the right role based on your career goals and employment preferences.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Temp Software Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Temp Software Developer, you need strong programming skills in languages such as Java, Python, or JavaScript, along with a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, agile development tools, and rapid onboarding to new codebases is typically required. Adaptability, effective communication, and the ability to quickly learn new technologies are crucial soft skills in this fast-paced, project-based role. These skills ensure that temp developers can effectively contribute to teams, deliver quality code quickly, and integrate seamlessly into diverse work environments.

Job description

Are you a Software Developer who is eager to launch your career building technology that makes a real-world impact? Emerson has an exciting opportunity for you.

We are looking for curious, motivated engineers who are passionate about learning and ready to grow their skills in a collaborative, supportive environment. Based in Austin, Texas, you will join a diverse community and work as a contributing member of a cross-functional Agile team focused on the development of Emerson's PACSystems technologies.

PACSystems is trusted by leading companies across discrete and hybrid manufacturing industries to safely and reliably control critical processes. In this role, you will be focused on client-side software that engineers and operators rely on every day, building applications used to configure, program, visualize, and manage PACSystems controllers and automation solutions. Your work will directly contribute to the experience of the engineers and operators who depend on these tools in demanding industrial environments.

You will contribute to the design and development of next-generation PACSystems software capabilities. Our team embraces modern development practices, including AI-assisted and spec-driven development methodologies, where structured specifications and intelligent tooling are used to accelerate delivery, improve quality, and reduce ambiguity. We are actively investing in these approaches and want to bring in developers who are excited to learn and grow alongside them.

You will be part of an organization led by leaders who are deeply committed to technical excellence, Agile principles, mentorship, and building an environment where engineers do their best work. If you are looking for a role where you can grow quickly, contribute meaningfully, and be part of something that has lasting real-world impact, we want to hear from you.

IN THIS ROLE, YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES WILL:

  • Collaborate - Contribute to a creative team atmosphere, participate in code reviews, and actively engage in Agile activities such as sprint planning and retrospectives. Take part in Hackathons, Tech Talks, and Communities of Practice with like-minded engineers.
  • Learn from Domain Experts - Work alongside experienced engineers, product managers, and subject matter experts in industrial automation to build your understanding of the domain and learn how real-world requirements translate into software.
  • Contribute to Specifications - Support the authoring and review of structured software specifications, gaining hands-on experience with spec-driven development practices and AI-assisted development workflows.
  • Innovate - Write software using modern tools, frameworks, and AI-enabled development practices. Learn to apply spec-driven methodologies to improve quality, reduce ambiguity, and accelerate your own delivery.
  • Automate - Write automated unit tests and contribute to system-level testing to support a healthy automation pipeline and a release-ready product.
  • Iterate - Actively participate in team retrospectives and bring ideas for how the team can improve its processes and ways of working.
  • Tech Savvy - Stay curious about emerging technologies, AI development tooling, and spec-driven methodologies, and look for opportunities to apply new skills to real problems.
  • Always Curious - Ask questions, challenge assumptions, and take time to understand the problem before diving into solutions. Treat every task as a learning opportunity.
  • Team Obsessed - Engage openly with your teammates, actively seek feedback, and commit to continuous improvement in both your work and your craft.

WHO YOU ARE: You stay on top of new technologies and look for ways to apply it. You take time to ask questions and define the problem. You make learning a priority and a goal. You engage in collaborative planning and constantly look to improve your team and deliver results.

FOR THIS ROLE, YOU WILL NEED:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related STEM discipline

  • 2+ years demonstrated proficiency in software development principles OR

  • Internship experience in software development principles and a master's degree in engineering, computer science or related STEM discipline

  • Foundational knowledge of software development in one or more languages such as JavaScript, Python, C#, or C++

  • Strong problem-solving skills and a genuine desire to understand complex systems

  • Legal authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship now and in the future
    • Individuals with temporary visas such as E, F-1 (including those with OPT or CPT), H-1, H-2, L-1, B, J or TN, or who need sponsorship for work authorization now or in the future, are not eligible for hire.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS THAT SET YOU APART:

  • Exposure to web or desktop application development using React with TypeScript and/or JavaScript
  • Familiarity with version control systems such as Git
  • Basic understanding of APIs or client-server application architecture
  • Curiosity about or exposure to AI-assisted development tools, spec-driven workflows, or structured specification formats such as OpenAPI or JSON Schema
  • Any experience with Agile or structured development processes
  • Genuine interest in industrial automation, process control, or real-time systems
