The Wind Tunnel Engineer will work under the guidance of wind tunnel Director, the Principal Investigator(s), and faculty (ies) in charge for the wind tunnel facility. In this role, you will be responsible for setup, operation and maintenance of the facility, setup models and instrumentation, calibration procedures, data management, report writing and safety.
Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor's Degree in related field; Three to five years experience in wind tunnel testing; three to five years experience programming languages, such as LabView and Matlab; One to three years experience with PIV, hot-wire anemometry, force blance, strain gages, pressure scanners, flow visualizations; multi-hole pressure probes; one to three years experience in mechanical design and mechatronics.

Preferred Education and Experience
  • Experience in wind tunnel testing.
  • Certifications in LabView programming, specifically in LabView I, II, DAQ and connectivity;
  • Experience with PIV, hot-wire anemometry, force balance, strain gages, pressure scanners, flow visualizations; multi-hole pressure probes;
  • Experience in mechanical design and mechatronics;
  • Experience in programming languages, such as LabView and Matlab;
  • Problem solving, engineering and math skills;
  • Ability to work in an international and multicultural environment;
  • Oral and written communication skills;
  • Interpersonal skills and team player;
  • Ability to work in a very organized and precise manner.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Wind Tunnel Engineer will follow the work plan scheduled by the wind tunnel director and meet day-to-day short and long term objectives. The Wind Tunnel Engineer will have the ability to resolve issues through immediate action or short-term planning.
In addition you will:
  • Write and develops programs in LabView for control and monitor of wind tunnel systems, such as the fan, traversing system, cooling system, turntables and data acquisition system;
  • Planning and perform periodic maintenance of the facility and instrumentations;
  • Design, construction and instrumentation of wind tunnel models;
  • Setup, calibration and maintenance of instruments;
  • Assist in the general maintenance and upkeep in the lab by insuring that the lab systems and instrumentations are functioning properly;
  • Write and develops programs in LabView and Matlab for the different measurement techniques and relative data acquisition;
  • Perform and analyze basic and advanced testing needed to advance projects;
  • Oversee students and researcher experiments, and report any technical or safety alert as necessary;
  • Perform and complete Lab Work Requests (LWR) assigned by the wind tunnel director;
  • Write certification test plans, design assurance test plans, test procedures and formal test reports;
  • Review test data for accuracy and completeness;
  • Oversee the organization of the workshop and storage of material and instrumentations;
  • Lead data storage on local computers and remote server for archive purposes.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering is among the fastest growing programs at UT Dallas. The department was established in 2008, and currently has nearly 900 students enrolled. The department is home to WindSTAR, the NSF I/UCRC for wind energy research. In this prosperous scenario, the new UTD Boundary LAyer and Subsonic wind Tunnel (BLAST) plays a strategic role for the exponential growth of the school. BLAST has a main test section producing boundary layer flows (30 m long, 2.8 wide, 2.1 m tall, max. velocity 34 m/s) and a small test section for subsonic aerodynamic applications (10 m long, 2,1 m wide, 2,1 m tall, max. velocity 50 m/s). State-of-the art measurements techniques, such as PIV, hot-wire anemometry, force balances, and pressure scanners will be set up.
