Job description

The Drafter I is an entry-level role supporting the engineering team with fiber and outside plant design drawings. We are willing to train the right person as long as they have strong attention to detail, can follow instructions, stay organized, and are comfortable learning computer-based drafting systems.

This position is fully onsite in Platte City, MO, Jonesburg, MO or Columbia, MO. There is not an option for a remote role.

Key Responsibilities

  • Create and update fiber design drawings using redlines, sketches, engineering instructions, and field data.
  • Incorporate markups from Engineering, QA/QC, and project leadership.
  • Maintain accurate drawing sets through HLD, LLD, construction, and as-built phases.
  • Follow drafting standards for scale, layers, symbols, annotations, and sheet organization.
  • Track revisions and maintain accurate file names, folders, and version control.
  • Communicate with Engineers and Leads when drawings or instructions require clarification.
  • Convert engineering information into CAD or GIS formats, including PDF-to-DWG conversions and GIS imports.
  • Prepare drawings and related files for QA/QC review and client submission.
  • Support the engineering team with additional drafting and project documentation as needed.

  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to follow technical instructions and learn new processes.
  • Comfortable working on a computer for most of the day.
  • Ability to organize files, track revisions, and maintain accurate documentation.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Willingness to learn CAD, GIS, FTTH, OSP, and utility engineering concepts.
  • Ability to manage shifting priorities and meet project deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Basic experience with CAD or GIS software, such as AutoCAD, ArcGIS, or IQGeo.
  • Previous telecom, fiber, utility, or engineering drafting experience.
  • Experience working from redlines, field notes, or engineering markups.
  • Familiarity with fiber routes, handholes, poles, strand, conduit, duct systems, or other OSP terminology.
