To thrive as a Design Consultant, you need a strong background in design principles, project management, and a relevant degree such as in graphic, interior, or industrial design. Proficiency with design software like Adobe Creative Suite, AutoCAD, or SketchUp, and knowledge of industry standards are vital, along with certifications like LEED for specialized fields. Exceptional communication, creativity, and problem-solving skills help you understand client needs and deliver innovative solutions. These capabilities are crucial for creating impactful designs that meet client objectives and ensure project success.

What types of projects do design consultants typically work on, and how do they collaborate with clients and other stakeholders?

Design consultants are often engaged in a wide range of projects, from developing brand identities and user experiences to designing physical spaces or products. They typically work closely with clients to understand their objectives and deliver tailored solutions, and may also collaborate with cross-functional teams such as marketing, engineering, and project management. Regular client meetings, presentations, and feedback sessions are common, ensuring alignment and satisfaction throughout the project lifecycle. This collaborative environment allows consultants to leverage diverse expertise while managing client expectations and project milestones.

What is design consulting?

Design consulting is a professional service where experts provide guidance and solutions on design-related projects, such as branding, product development, user experience, or interior design. Job description

Department: Enclosure Design & Consulting

Job Summary:

Lerch Bates is seeking an Associate Consultant – Enclosure Design & Consulting to join our Repair & Modernization team. This role is responsible for identifying, planning, directing, and overseeing multiple building enclosure projects under the guidance of a Senior Consultant.

The Associate Consultant serves as a technical liaison to clients and project teams, providing solutions, recommendations, and peer review support across a range of building enclosure consulting and commissioning (BECx) services.

This position is designed for professionals looking to develop into a fully independent Consultant role. The Associate Consultant will build technical depth, project leadership capability, and client management experience while contributing to complex, fast-paced projects. The role also includes mentoring and technical support of junior staff as knowledge develops.

About Lerch Bates:

Lerch Bates (LB) is a global technical consulting firm focused on improving how buildings perform for owners, designers, and the people who use them every day. For more than 75 years we’ve partnered on some of the world’s most complex and highprofile projects. Today we provide Total Building Performance expertise that pairs Building Science and Building Flow with one integrated team delivery. Our work spans design, construction, investigation, repair, management and modernization with one consistent goal: helping clients make confident, wellinformed decisions in an increasingly complex Built Environment.

We are each 100% equal owners in the LB ESOP, which drives our ownership mindset and shapes everything we do. At Lerch Bates, your expertise matters, your voice carries weight, and your work directly contributes to our shared success as OneLB. We invest in professional growth, collaboration, and technical excellence, supporting challenging and meaningful work alongside people who care about getting it right. If you’re motivated by solving real problems, working on impactful projects, and being part of a team that truly owns both the work and the outcome, you’re ready to be more than an employee. You’re ready to be an employee-owner.
